I posted this on a Culturelle thread but wanted a little broader spectrum of possible readers.

Currently, the only way I can describe how I feel is that it's similiar to having the flu...queasy, heartburn, indigestion, horrible gas (no matter what I do or don't eat), days of loose stools (just once a day though), but I'll also have days when I'm unable to have a bm, bloated, lack of energy, etc. I had a flare this past summer and just don't seem to be able to recover. I weened off the prenisone which has left me with a wonderful rash on my face that is some sort of new wrinkle resulting from prednisone withdrawal. I had to take a low dose antibiotic to get the rash under control. Now, after being off the antibiotic for about 3 weeks, the rash is coming back. Also, another new problem - I have ulcerations on the inside of my mouth.

I know that many of you will understand when I say that there are days when I feel so depressed about not being able to be healthy. I'm sick and tired or being sick and tired. I also know that many of you are suffering much more than I am -I try to put that into perspective when feeling sorry for myself.

Any thoughts or suggestions are always appreciated.

Since it sounds like you're having quite a bit of upper digestive symptoms, you might want to try Natren's powdered Megadophilus that concentrates on the upper GI in place of the probiotic you're currently using. Digestive enzymes might also help.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Welcome to the forum, Smitharoo. A little more information would be helpful. Where in your colon is the inflammation? What medications are you taking, and what natural remedies?

Judilyn...

Sorry, usually all that info automatically is added on.

I was diagnosed in 2000 with pancolitis. I originally took Asacol but was switched to Colazal several years ago (6-9 per day). I've been off and on prednisone several times, use Rowasa when needed and started using probiotics (Rueteri) this past summer. I take fish oil, E, calcium, a multi, C.
I have always had good results with prednisone during a flare and would bounce right back to my "normal". But this past time I just can't seem get things back under control. It doesn't seem to matter what I eat - I'm very careful about what I eat and try to exercise as much as possible.

Are probiotics good for everyone? Is Rueteri the best choice?

Thanks in advance for any advise you can offer.

Hi...are you using the Rowasa at this time? I'd suggest you might want to consider...very low in the rectum inlammation can cause upper digestive discomfort.

The other thing is that you could consider to try some Zantac and see if that helps some of the nausea. Have you had an upper gastro series done?

Reuteri isn't the "best"...it's one of the important probiotics to use for GI health. It comes in combo with rhamnosus and others...so, in reality it's not an "alone" probiotic.

I personally think that prednisone sets up an emotional/mental connection that flares have to be dealt with quickly...but being on pred off and on may determine the quickness of flares and how exacerbated they can be.

Bouncing back is the optimum statement. I would suggest you maybe start on the Rowasa and stay with the Colazal to possibly set up your GI for lowering the possible simmering of inflammation. It's a longer more committed process...but an option over pred.

You'll have UC for the rest of your life....I really encourage to see the options and success that 5ASA meds can offer.

If you're in a hurry to deal, then they will probably not be the best for you.

I use Natural Factors probiotics and throw in the Primadophilus Reuteri in once in a while. I take them only at night.

I also am using digestive enzymes...one in particular that contains serrapetase (which was mentioned about a month ago)..Zymactive. I take it on an empty stomach and I've noticed much less gas/discomfort. As well, I use Gas Stop by Renew Life after eating some meals. As well, been good for me.

Hope you feel better soon...I know the discomfort can be so disconcerting.

Quincy,

Thanks for the info on Zymactive.  I purchased some on Saturday - started taking it that afternoon.  Is it all in my mind - or does it start acting almost immediately?  By Sunday I noticed a big improvement on the bloated, gassy feeling.  This morning (Monday), I took a tablet as soon as I got up (on an empty stomach) before eating anything.  Again, there is a big improvement.

I'm curious if this is something that is meant to be taken daily?  Do you just take it when you're feeling uncomfortable or do you take it all the time once you've started it?  The label recommended taking it 20 minutes before meals.  Do you take it 3 times per day?

Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I've taken it sometimes 2 times up to 5 times...but it does loosen the stool a bit more when I've taken it more...but average would be 3 times daily.

You can take it during the day without eating afterward...it's still fine.

I think part of it is the bromelain (which was recommended by another member a long while ago)...I found it did lessen even the reflux...but Zymactive has bromelain in it...so maybe it's the combo.

I think it depends on what you have difficulty digesting...if it's digested quicker in the stomach, there won't be much to "ferment" during the process in the colon.

Regarding other digestive enzymes...I do take the Gas Stop after and sometimes I take with a zymactive..depending on what I eat. i'm experimenting, but it's actually a pretty good one for me. Glad it's working for you.

Only drawback...the zymactive smells like male cat pee and will sometimes be reflected in the stool...not totally offensive, but mildly there. Maybe depending on what I eat.

Keep me posted on your results. Are you male or female? Curious about another notable of mine.

There's two more answers!  Looser stool and odor - I had noticed both.  Thanks so much for your quick response.

I'm a female - 58 years old...what is your "notable"?

Thanks for all your help Quincy

You're welcome...

Since I've gained a few pounds in the past few years....I covet each and every one...but with the weight gain and being on estrogen, (ok, and some bad eating habits and not enough exercise)...cellulite has taken up residence.

My notable is that it seems to be decreasing....strange side effect??....I don't think it's my eyesight...lol. That's about a month since I've taken the Zymactive...interested to see how it goes.

Keep me posted as to how you're getting along with it.
