Has anyone else noticed that the many posts about hair loss have stopped? Or least there are far fewer posts about hair loss these days. This seems to confirm my theory that in general hair falls out more in the Fall season, and we all get very concerned with it from about Sept-Dec. I've pretty much stopped thinking about it since November.

Just thought I'd point that out!

That's interesting and hopeful. I've avoided talking about hair b/c I am in denial I am actually losing it! I can run my hand through my hair and many strands come out--more than I remember before taking UC meds. I didn't know if it was my age, my meds, what? I hope I see less coming out for the spring and summer months--that would be nice!

Mine has been thinning, but I had noticed this prior to my UC diagnosis, back in the 1990's. I also lost hair like crazy after both my boys were born. I think that when I'm on the prednisone I lose hair after a few weeks, but it does seem to come back once I'm off the meds. I finally came to my senses and cut my hair short, and it looks and feels so much better now.

My hair is in excellent shape, still fairly thick even though I'm 40, since our hair naturally starts to thin as we age, but it's still thick enough and I wear it long which for many makes their hair appear thinner compared to wearing it in a shorter bob style...it's also very shiney and elastic, not dry and easily breakable...but I credit it to the fact that I'm not on any oral RX for my crohns, and I do take bee propolis and omega 3-6-9...I also moisturize my hair every night before bed with extra virgine olive oil.

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it!  LOL  :)

Since all of this UC stuff, I have lost clumps of hair and my hair has seemed dry. So, I only "wash" it like 2 times a week but I condition it daily so it feels like I wash it. I also just use a pic when it is wet and that has seemed to help alot because I do not have clumps coming out anymore.

My hair is doing so much better. I got a double whammy...I had postpartum hair loss and then a major flare right after I had my son 2 1/2 years ago. I couldn't believe how much fell out. I'm lucky and have a full, thick head but it was still scary.

I started balding after I went on Pred. Black people of my age rarely bald and so I know for sure that either it's UC or pred that causes hair loss.

My worst hair loss was last jan - april.  Also the time of a horrible flare.  I still lose quite a bit, but not as much as back then.  It seems to mostly fall out in the same 2 spots - on either side of my forehead.  So its not to noticeable unless I pull my hair back in a ponytail.

Well I think my hair has finally stopped falling out but I'm almost too scared to say it incase I tempt fate!!  It fell out last year from May until November/December time and I lost lots of it.  A lot has grown back in but it is not back to how it was as is still very fine at the front of my head but I suppose this will be as good as it gets.

I've actually felt brave enough to have it cut now today and they are planning to go short which will be a big change for me as I have always got by being able to tie it up.  I've actually got a sore tummy today and I'm sure it is because I'm stressing about having it done!!

Medication:

Asacol 2 x 3 daily, Probiotics plus various other vitamins

my hair definately was falling out witht he entocort, hopefully now that i am tapering off it and wll soon just be on Asacol it will make it better. I was suggested buing a boars hair brush and brushing it for 4 minutes a day and buying that horse shampoo and conditioner, mane n tail.  It has bee fabulous from time totime i alternate but the shampoo and conditioner i really feel is helping me out a lot and giving my hair the nutrients it might be missing.

I am losing more and more hair I have a lot of it so it is not noticeable on my head (yet I am afraid).

also I notice a lot more strands of my hair all over the place, my sink, my desk at work, on my clothes.

I have gone from 60 to 40mg of pred but 40 is still pretty high, so I hope I don't get much worse, better would be good.

Also, I only have to shave my legs every other week now instead of every other day, but that has been going on for a while.

That's interesting, b/c I seem to be losing lots of hair when running my hand through, or the brush through or just washing. BUT, I seem to be shaving less often (actually I like that part of it!) I think it might be the Lialda. I also have very dry skin this winter--unusually dry. Beth, are you feeling better on less pred?

My Husband has been on Prednisone for a year now and most of it was spent on a dose between 30 and 60 mg and I've noticed that his hair is really thinning on the sides and back...he was thinning genetically on the top but all of it's going faster now.

He also got so mal-nourished and messed up on Prednisone and having a year long flare that his goatee is almost blond (he has dark brown almost black hair).

Hmmm.... I've been losing hair ever since I was diagnosed with UC back in May of 06'. I was taking Asacol and started losing hair...badly. There is no history of baldness in my family.I exercise 5 times a week, eat healthy, and haven't had a flare up since I was diagnosed. I don't know what's going on.  I talked to my doctor and he recommended Lialda...I've been doing research and reading forums like these and such and it seems that people are losing hair from taking Lialda as well! I don't wanna be bald by the time I'm 23! Please help me out!

AlabamaBabs, yes, I am doing better on a little less pred, thanks for asking. I also lose some hair when I run my hands through it, that did not happen typically before. I know I am cleaning the hair out of my brush a lot more about once a week now rather than every other month or so.

I'm totally losing my hair. I have a least a combful every morning and then I'm constantly picking hair off of myself during the day and always vacumning! I heard it could be the Imuran but that it's supposed to get better after you adjust to it. Truth?
29 years old; diagnosed since 1997 (but I've had it forever)
Current meds:
-Prednisone 10 mg!
-Re-trying Imuran; I'm at 75 mg now...but it's making me so tired!
-Asacol 12/day
-Failed Remicade (8/06-8/07)
-Calcium + Vitamin D(for my steroid-affected bones)
-Prenatal vitamins (for the extra stuff, not for pregnancy)

Hi guys,

Im on the crohns board. Over a year and a half ago I had to use entocort and noticed that my hair started falling out on the taper. I never ever had hair in my shower drain until then. Now I have enough to clog it. Coming off the entocort slowed it down a bit but now it is right back up there.

I also had super thick hair so I didn't care much and almost appreciated it but now its thin and dry and scraggily to the point that I don't want to lose anymore. I am also on Pentasa and Ortho-Evra which are also known to cause hair loss problems. I googled Ortho Evra and hair loss and a lot of people reported it getting worse when they quit being on the patch. GREAT. I was also starting to get breast pain and a decreased sex drive so I was considering switching it but now I am scared it could make my hair loss worse.

I also used to have a bad habit of picking at my scalp (see crohns post) and I am sure that constantly being at my hair was making it worse. So I officially quit doing that. I have some cracks on my lips and have been getting some leg foot spasms so now I am wondering if I have a Vitamen deficiency like Iron or B12 that also is leading to the hair loss.

I have started taking Biotin vitamens and a multi. At the suggestion of PB4 I am using a Qtip to put some olive oil on my scalp the night before I know I am going to wash my hair. In the past when it was thinning I washed it with tres-a-me vitamen B shampoo/conditioner that worked well too. It came in a large bottle at CVS for like $4. I am currently using Herbal Essences and might switch back.

Finally, I am getting my hair trimmed and relayered today. Getting rid of all my split ends might at least make it appear healthier. I wanted highlights too but I am going to skip the chemicals for now. I will keep you all posted on my progress and any discussions with doctors that help me narrow down the cause/problem.
26 Year old married female.  Diagnosed w/ CD 3 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD.  Currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day, hysociamine prn, nexium, and ortho evra.  Good times!!!
