I was diagnosed with non specific colitis back in October after having mild rectal bleeding. I was put on Asacol 6 pills a day and am still on that dose with a view to lowering it in April (after 6 months). I went into "remission" immediately after taking these tables - probably after about 4 days and have been that way since. My bowel movements have gone down from 3 or 4 a day at once stage to usually once a day.

My main concern now is that my urine often looks dark, this morning it looked brown! Could this be the Asacol or de-hydration or both? Can anyone help please?

My stools are normal although, well formed but a little light in colour. I am also having problems putting on weight no matter how much I eat although I am not losing weight.

I have told my GI about both of these problems but he doesn't seem to be concerned at all.

Any advice?

Diagnosis in October 2007: Non Specific Colitis (Mild inflammation on Rectum, Plus some patchy inflammation on Right and Left side of Colon)

Medication Prescribed: 800mg Mesalazine (Asacol) 3 times a day

Symptoms: Two or Three BM's a day, mild urgency, no diarrhea, blood or constipation, irregular stool pattern due to IBS. Also suffer from anxiety and stress.

Hello! I take 12 asacol a day and yes, there is a definate urine color change. I try to stay hydrated as much as possible as this seems to help. As far as gaining weight, I lost 50 pounds during a flare up 2 years ago. Unfortunately I developed thrush from the antibiotics which made almost everything taste differantly. I went on a chocolate milk/slim-jim diet. I would eat all the things people on diets would kill to eat. It took a little while for the weight to start coming back. Trust me, it comes back and if you arent careful you will get more than you wanted :-) . Good luck.

Thanks for that. So drinking lots of water will help so I will try it. So just to confirm is darker urine a side effect of Asacol?

In my personal circumstance, yes the darker urine was attributed to the asacol. I believe it has something to do with the heavy coating used on the pill. Before I was put on the asacol, my urine was never dark in color unless I was dehydrated. Usually I notice the darker urine first thing in the morning. After a coulple of glasses of water it pretty much goes back to normal color.

I've never had that happen, but it seems others have the experience...so I'd say it's definitely a possibility for you London.

Have you been taking antihistamines or not drinking enough fluids?

Are you taking B vitamins?

Has this been a consistent....what colour has it been up till yesterday..dark yellow or gold?

There are some foods that can cause it darker urine.

You say your stools are lighter...how light is light..what colour?

I don't drink much water so the urine has always been gold/yellow for me especially in the morning. During the day it stabilises and it has a tinge of yellow in it. The really dark urine usually happens in the morning for me. Otherwise I don't have any other symptoms and it doesn't hurt or smell. Plus this urine colour has only happened since I started Asocol.

It sounds as though you and the others have pinned it. Do drink more water...it'll help your "plumbing"..lol!
