Do any of you have episodes of terrible pain, fatigue, increased/loose stools when you are in "remission" that will last for a few days to a week, get better only to come back??  Or could this be a sign of a flare coming??
Your experiences/thoughts would be appreciated!

Fatigue - I'm always tired, but I take azathioprine and that is probably the culprit.  As for pain and looser stools - that does happen sometimes - but usually I can attribute it to something I've eaten.  If I've had too many fruits & vegies for example - I know that at night I will have pain and cramping with extra bathroom trips the next day.  If the extra/loose stools cannot be attributed to something your child has eaten - or they are happening more frequently - it could be a sign that s/he is starting to flare and should make some adjustments to the meds.  My first adjustment it always to add back in some form of rectal med - like Canasa suppositories or Rowasa enemas.

My energy level isn't what it was before I had UC, but then that could be simply because I'm a few years older. I'll have looser stools if I eat too many fatty foods or too much fiber. The only pain I've had since in remission was from antibiotics. I started getting that heavy, dull pain across my lower abdomen, so I called the doc and changed antibiotics.
Moderate to severe left-sided UC (21 cm) diagnosed 2001.
Asacol, Rowasa, Pentasa, Prednisone, Entocort, Azathioprine
Colazal,  Remicade, Nature's Way Primadophilus Reuteri.
In remission since April, 2006. Remicade has been my wonder drug.

I have bouts of rectal pain which the doctor decided was proctalgia fugax. But I too at night after eating a good bit for the day have pressure low in what feels like the pelvic area when it is really my bowel area, this extends into the next morning. But since I have had female related issues also I don't know what of all of this is related to that or the other. I have low back pain upon rising in the morning, and the gas I have is always more prominent in the lower left side at times during the day. Feels like a stinging tingling feeling. I experience this in my upper middle part of my abdomen also and also it tightens up which is from the gas, like a knotted feeling. This drives me crazy. I do not have a problem with loose stools from eating too much fiber. The only problem I have had in the past from that is going to the bathroom multiple times a day and having spasms afterward that would ease up eventually. But that was from my body trying to adjust to bran flakes that I ate twice a day. I eat it twice a day now with no problem. And I stay tired most of the time also, but I am 48 years old, which is a factor.
Diagnosed with left sided UC in sigmoid colon and rectum 1986.
Put on Azulfidine 2 X 3 a day and Rowasa enemas 60mg.
Have been pretty much in remission overall other than a few flares over the past 21 years.
Medicine changed to Asacol 400mg 2 pills X3 times a day. Taken off all meds in 2004.
Diagnosed with acid reflux 2005. Put on Protonix 40mg.
Have been using Canasa 1000mg suppositories nightly since January 2007.
Was put back on Asacol 400mg 2 pills 2X a day in July 2007 maintenance.

Any symptom that continues no matter what you're eating I would conider it to be a flare especially if it's been after a bout of "constipation" type symptoms.

One question....are you expecting your period soon? Hormone fluctuations between ovulation and period can definitely exacerbate some flare symptoms.

Varying degrees of inflammation and where it is will give varying degrees of symptoms.

If it's constant and increasing, you're flaring. It would be good to consider catching it earlier by using some rectal meds (if you haven't tried them in the past..could be a good thing to start).

*Heather*Status: mini flare Dec 28... tapered to every second night
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~5ASA: Asacol (6 daily) + Salofalk enemas (increase for flares tapered to maintenance)
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed
~Probiotic 3(Natural Factors Protec) bedtime + 1 (Primadophilus Reuteri) occasionally
~multi-digestive enzymes as needed ....bromelain 1 - 2x daily
~Ranitidine,Pariet (reflux) Effexor XR 75mg;  Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma)
~URSO for PSC (or PBC) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)
My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS"  worth it !!!
