I just read in a posting that it was stated Asacol is a med to prevent colon cancer.  Is this accurate?  No where have I found that in my info on Asacol.  My doctor told me it was a med that would coat my intestines & help protect my insides from further damage.

You may have read one of my old posts, my GI told me that it can help prevent colon cancer. That's not why we're taking it obviously, but hopefully it's a side benefit.
Asacol 4 tabs 2x daily
Forvia once a day
Probiotic twice daily
Methotrexate 3 pills once a week
Actonel once a week
Calcium supp.
1 mg Folic Acid daily

It's actually the 5ASA meds, not just the Asacol.

~5ASA: Asacol (6 daily) + Salofalk enemas (increase for flares tapered to maintenance)
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed
~Probiotic 3(Natural Factors Protec) bedtime + 1 (Primadophilus Reuteri) occasionally

I'm here in the UK and my GI told me the same, that it can help prevent colon cancer, or at least reduce the risk slightly when you have UC.
Diagnosed May 2005- left sided UC.Diagnosed with iritis in my Right eye March 2007
On Pentasa 8 tabs a day
Also on Pentasa enemas one daily to treat current flare.

Plus Aloe vera, probiotics, multi vits, turmeric, bromelain.

If having more frequent or more severe flares increases your risk of colon cancer, I would think any UC drug that decreased the frequency or intensity of flares would also decrease your risk of colon cancer.
12 Asacol
100 mg Imuran
