I have been on Remicade for 2 years. I was wondering if this is a drug that is usually used long term or just to get someone into remission? I really don't like the thought of having to get a two hour IV every eight weeks for the rest of my life. I have been in remission for about 6 months now. I have one BM a day w/o blood & eat anything I want. I would like to think that I could cut back on some of my meds starting with Remicade.

Thanks,
Winter

I'll be on it two years next month. I went over my 8 weeks once and started to have a few symptoms. I'd rather have my infusion every 8 weeks for the rest of my life than spend it in the bathroom like I did the previous five years.

Talk to your GI about this. One of the problems with going off is that sometimes you can't re-start the Remi if you need it again. A fair number of people have allergic reactions when they try to start it again.

If it's working for you, don't try to get off it. Like Judy said, it's MUCH worse to be flaring up. Before you started the Remicade, weren't you told that you would have to stay on it? You risk having a reaction if you stop taking it and try to get back on and there aren't many other medicines out there and they might not work for you anyways. Also, I don't recommend quitting the Asacol either. Maybe you could ask your doctor about lowering your doseage to the maintenance dose- 2pills 3x a day if you really want to lower anything. I would do (almost) anything to have one BM a day, no blood and eating whatever! It sounds like you're in remission! :)

The GI I went to when I started Remicade really didn't explain things very well. Thanks for all your input. Yes I am blessed to be doing so well. Still nervous about venturing far from a bathroom for fer of urgency
