As I've posted a couple times before I've been dealing with a flare that just won't go away since summer 07. My doc has put me on 100mg per day of imuran starting on Jan 15, 08. I have been tolerating this not to bad since I've been put on the drug however in the last couple days I have experienced much more nasseua then normal and now I am actually vomiting a couple times a day. To throw another stick in the spokes I also have a H Pylori infection that my GI doc does not want to treat until the colitis flare is under control. Now my question is how many people on Imuran experience the vomiting and if it is the imuran why would it only start now? I've been on the drug for over 3 weeks now with relatively manageable side effects. Or if anyone has had H Pylori before does that lead to vomiting?y

One last question, I know the literature says that imuran can take up to 3 months to work but for the people that are on it what time frame did they experience any benefits? I'm desperate to get into remission and get back to work. I've been on it for 3 weeks and am seeing no benefit whatsoever at this time. in fact now that the vomiting has been added I feel much worse then I did before I started the imuran. I'm already loosing enough food out the back door I can't stand to be throwing food up as well!!!

I hate this disease and what it is doing. I'm only 29, i have a 2 year old girl and I don't even have enough energy to play with her anymore. She doesn't understand, all she wants is her daddy to go for a walk with her or play outside and I barely have the energy or ability to get off the couch. I can't much more of this!!!

Currently in a flare since summer 07 - I desperately miss remission!!!
Current Meds: 15mg Pred, 2000mg salofalk, calcium supplements, Pantoloc, Buscopan, Clonazopam
Started 100mg Imuran Jan 15/08 - no noticeable effect yet...

Numb, I'm so sorry you're having such a bad time. Vomiting is a known side effect of Imuran, and you need to call your GI and report it. It could be okay, but it also could be the first indication of liver problems. Imuran can have an effect on liver function, so your doc may want to get some blood tests to be sure everything is okay.

Of course, nausea and vomiting can also occur during a UC flare just as part of the DD.

As far as effects from the Imuran, it usually takes at least two months to really be able to tell if it's helping. A frustrating wait, for sure, but a necessary one.

Hi numb, I've been on imuran since august07, i've upped doses several times (info inmy sig), and still haven't seen any effects. I too have severe nausea so my Gi stopped the imuran for a week to see if it improved. it' didn't. You may want to ask your Gi about stopping for a time.

I would call your GI immedietly and tell them you are so nauseas you are vomiting. That is not good at all! Do you have another prometheus test scheduled?

The fact that imuran hasn't been working for me thus far doesn't mean you won't see something sooner. There are some here that saw improvement in less than three months. Don't give up!

I think the vomiting is related to the severity of your UC (vomiting is a UC symptom) and not the Imuran. The fact that you have been on the drug since mid Janaury with makes it more likely that it's the disease causing these episodes.

Hi,

I was prescribed Azathioprine (I think it is the same as Imuran) 50 mg x 3 aday and took it for a few weeks and all of a sudden I started loosing my socks with the vomiting I underwent. I realized that this had to be the culprit. I did not contact my doctor right away because of an impending appointment so I quit the next day and the vomiting went away and has not returned.

Thanks for all the replies.... I have a call into the GI but I'm waiting for him to get back to me. If I stop taking the Imuran for a while does it reset the clock on how long it takes to work? My big concern is that if this stuff can take up to 3 months to kick in then the last thing I want to do is stop for a week then have to start the wait all over again. As I stated above I also have a H pylori infection so I don't know what effect that has on the whole thing.

All I'm thinking is that if Imuran doesn't work then I'm going to seriously consider the surgery. I'm sick of playing with drugs waiting for results, dealing with side effects. I know I'm just whining at this point but 8 months ago I was racing in 60km mountain bike races, jogging half marathons, and now I barely have the energy to play with a toddler. I've dropped about 40 lbs in the last 6 months and my muscles are at the point where I get sore legs just walking the dogs around the block.

I WANT MY LIFE BACK!!!

Do you take you imuran at night? I was on 6mp (imuran and 6mp are similar) and I was instructed to take it at night because of the nausea side effect. However it could be something more serious like the h-pylori getting worse (vomiting is a symptom of it). I'd definitely bring this up to your GI.
Good luck :)

My hubby was on imuran, two pills a day, and found that he ended up vomiting almost every day. I don't remember how soon this started occurring once he started the drug, but he did find that if he split the dose - one pill in the morning and one in the evening, he didn't have any more problems with the nausea.

We're not sure if the imuran ever did any good for him, but it doesn't matter now - surgery is scheduled for Monday. We're ready to have our lives back too! We didn't want it to come to needing the surgery, but here we are, as he can't stay in remission without the steroids any more.
Husband diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2003(?)
Hospitalized 4 times
Asacol, Imuran, probiotics, fish oil, Vit D, Librax, Zoloft, Metamucil
Started Digestive Advantage Colitis formula 7/16 - hoping for some relief!
1/11 - some of the meds are hit and miss at this point. Back on Prednisone for the 4th time - can't stay in remission without it now. Think he has stopped the fish oil, Digestive Advantage (although he said he thought it helped)
Consult with a surgeon this week, surgery recommended
Surgery scheduled for Feb. 11

I began getting nausea after a few weeks of Azathioprine, and I threw up probably three times total. Taking your aza after a big meal really helps. My body got used to the azathioprine after around a month, and I haven't been nauseous since then.

I think it started helping my colitis by a small amount right when I started, but I got a whole lot better around 3-4 months after starting.

I would ask your doc about the H.pylori causing vomiting. It could be possible.

can you up the prenisone to help get your health under control? it looks like yuo're only on 15 mg right now?

I'd check with your GI before assuming the vomiting is either UC or Imuran.

customarily, Imuran takes about 3 - 6 months to be effective. hang in there.

by the way, I have had no vomiting on Imuran, ever.
do you like yuor GI? you could also consider a second opinion in case someone else thinks the H.Pyl. should be treated.
this will get better.

I did make a post a while back about the h pylori.  My current GI tried to treat me for it but I had nasty side effects to the Flagyl that they put me on and I had to come off it after only 3 1/2 days.  At that time my GI said I would be better to wait until the UC was under control before trying to tackle the HP bacteria.  I'm only on 15mg of pred as I am tapering down from 40mg.  At 40mg I was getting no benefit from the pred so the docs made the decision to taper me off it.

At this point if the imuran does not work then I think I'm going go after the surgery option.  It's been over 6 months now that i've been in this flare and it is affecting everything me and my family are trying to accomplish.  I need my life back!!

The imuran started at 75mg for my husband and then upped to 150mg. by the Mayo clinic after 4 months on what they thought was too low of a dose. He started to feel better within a few months and the imuran has made the difference as he suffered for an entire year - on and off prednisone to no avail.

He didn't have any nausea problems.

However - the H-Pylori situation. He and I both have it. We needed to wait until after he got off the prednisone. The Dr and us decided to wait until early Feb to start the treatment as we wanted the holidays and a cruise we were taking out of the way first.

We just started the flagyl, doxycycline and pepto bismol two days ago.

It is inconvenient trying to mesh these meds along with his other ones but I worked out a schedule. The meds have very definite instructions on how to properly take them so it is an all day affair taking these meds.

I am hoping and praying that these meds do not compromise and mess up the balance and make him regress at all. This is only the 2nd day on the meds and I woke up with a headache that has lasted all day and tonight. Hopefully we will both be able to tolerate and finish this 2 week regimine but so far I'm not too happy with these meds.
