What meds are you already on? Normally, immunosuppresant drugs are not the first line of defense upon diagnosis.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.
Therapeutic dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and Mucosaheal. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal.

Freakzilla - it really depends what particular Immune Mondoulator/s your GI is talking about as there are a few different types:

Monoclonal antibodies - Like Remicade or Humira;
Fusion proteins - Such as Abatacept;
Imus series - Hardcore organ transplant type stuff (not used for UC at all from what I know);
Others such as 6-MPs - Azathioprine & Immuran.

There is a good chance your GI is talking about Aza or Immuran. The other likely possibility is Remicade.

These drugs provide great results in most people. They just need to be well monitored by your GI.

I'm on Abatacept and Azathioprine - these two have helped me heaps and have given me a massive boost in my quality of life. I've had little difficulty handling either. The Azathioprine just makes me feel physically tired sometimes.

Six years on Azathioprine (that's the generic for Imuran in case anyone mentions that brand name medication to you) and it's really worked quite well for me in that I've only had three minor flares that were easily brought back under control by adding (for a short period of time) rectal meds.

Like others comment, I wonder sometimes if my lack of energy isn't tied to the Azathioprine, but I've struggled with energy issues ever since I got depressed a long, long, LONG time ago.

Ahhhh, the good old days, when I had that spark, that drive, that sizzle. Now, I'm just blah, blah, blah.

Sporadic proctitis since about 1985. Mother had J-pouch surgery 1983.
DX'd with clostridium difficile in 2000. Pred, two courses of Flagyl, then Vancomycin finally got rid of it. 2001 colonoscopy dx'd left-sided UC. . Treated with prednisone, Rowasa, Asacol. Asacol not working, switched to Imuran. Three small flares since in 2002, 2005, and 2007, brought under control with steroid and Rowasa enemas. Lap Chole performed October 26, 2007, after gall bladder attack in June, '07.
Daily meds: 100 mg Azathioprine and 225 mg Effexor XR (for chronic, longstanding depression), many vitamins and Primadophilus Reuteri
