A brief history of my experience with UC:

I was diagnosed in June 2007 and put on asacol 400mg, 6 pills a day and mesalamine enemas. Symptoms cleared up for about a month, but then a little bit of blood started to appear in normal bowel movements. Went back to doc and he had a look around and said there was an inch worth of activity. He advised me to go back on the enemas, which I did. I became pregnant in August and continued with my asacol and enemas. Besides a little blood with normal stools, I felt perfectly healthy (no cramping, pain, nauesea, etc). Fast forward a couple of months to January 2008 when my flare really started to show it's ugly head. Had pretty bad cramping, blood and loose bm's-- enemas and asacol no longer sufficient. Doc put me on a rectal steriod which helped slightly (could sleep through the night but still had frequent bm's (6-8) and pain during the day). Since I wasn't improving he decided that I should do a two week dose of prednisone- week one 40 mg tapering down to 20 mg week two. Today- I'm having 2-3 loose bm's a day that are accompanied by painful cramping. This usually happens in the am and for the rest of the day and night I'm fine. The only real problem I seem to have now is getting that elusive normal bowel movement.

So, a couple of questions for you:

Based on my history described above, would you say that I'm heading for remission?
Should I be taken off prednisone before my issues have resolved themselves completely?
I have an appointment with a GI tomorrow. Do you have any advice on what I should ask or suggest to him?

And one last question about prednisone:

Has anyone else noticed an increased heart rate while taking prednisone?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Hi...did the doc not increase the asacol? before your flare started...were you on a maintenance dosage of the enemas or not at all?

I would say you're improving....but I hope you're not stopping the enemas or the asacol....the asacol should be upped as well.

You still have to taper the pred...

The doc could have given you a 10mg prescription of dicyclomine to help lessen the gut cramping.

Your food intake could help a bit regarding comfort/discomfort....
