Was wondering what you guys thought was a good way to taper off of Cortenemas? Because they're not pills, you can't just take less each night (or can you?). My doctor is suggesting trying to alternate nights for a couple of weeks, then every third night, then off. To me, it seems like my body is going to get a jolt of steroids every other night, so it's not really helping the taper process. Does anyone have any better ideas? Thanks!

The every-other-night plan usually works pretty well. Or, if you wanted to try something more gradual, you could squeeze only part of the enema in. (It's been a while since I've used Cortenema, but I remember it being like the Rowasa bottles where you can do that.) With Cortifoam, I sometimes just fill half the applicator while I'm trying to taper. That way I also get the psychological benefit of knowing I used it, which I'm sure helps a lot too!

I see in your signature that you're using Cortifoam in the AM. If you keep that constant and taper only the cortenema, your body is still getting some steroids every day. I think that will make it even easier to taper the cortenema by skipping a night.

Are you tapering off the cortenemas because you are feeling better? I hope so! If you're still not feeling well, I wouldn't taper off yet. I wait until I have no blood, nearly no mucus, and no D before I start lowering my Cortifoam use.

I've always continued to fill the applicator full and tapered every other night but if I noticed any worsening then I would go back a bit and stay on it for a few days then try tapering the same way again.

Hi guys, I am tapering because since I started Lialda 2 weeks ago, I've stopped having blood/mucous and diarrhea! In fact, my frequency and urgency have gotten much better and the stools are formed. I'm still going 3-5 times a day, but that is so much better than 15-20! I feel like a whole new person! I'm hoping that I can add some pro/prebiotics and I'll be even better. Also going to try to switch into Rowasa to replace the topical steroids.

Thanks!
