I have had uc for at least 15 years. I am in the middle of a flare. Have been for over a year I guess. I just thought it was normal for uc'ers to go lots. I always have blood and somewhat formed stools. Lately before colonoscopy it got bad, going 20+ times a day with no poo just mucus and blood. Plus the feeling that I am never done. I had colonoscopy on Friday the 8th and Dr. said inflamation in rectum. (I have an appointment with him on Thrusday) He prescribed cortifoam. My question is how long does it take cortifoam to work? I am down to about 10 bathroom trips with only mucus/blood. No poo. I take asacal 2/ 2X day and am currently taking miralax at night for constipation. At first had LOTS of pain but that has gone away now only somewhat discomfort in tummy area under belly button left side.
Thanks

For me, it can sometimes take about a week, using it twice a day, before I can really say that I'm doing much better. But I usually see gradual improvement throughout the week. I would give it a couple weeks before you determine how it's working for you.

4 Asacol a day is a very low dose. Did your doctor say why he doesn't want you to take more? I used to take 12 a day, for example.

Are you using the Cortifoam once or twice a day?

Also, the miralax made me do a double-take. Sounds like you're using the bathroom enough without help... I guess it's because you've only got blood/mucus. But it still sounds odd to me. Have you tried anything else for that? Like fiber drinks or diet changes?

I'm a big fan of Cortifoam. I hope it works quickly for you too!

I do see a little improvement with less blood/mucus. I am down from 20+ bathroom trips to 10+. He hasn't said why the low dose of Asacol. I intend to ask him when I see him Thursday. In fact I have a lot of questions for him. I am keeping a notebook now. To think I was never told what to expect with this disease. When to see him ect. I am using the cortifoam at night only. He gave me a perscription for 3 weeks...1 canister that won't last 3 weeks...with one refill. THe miralax is for the constipation. I was constipated for at least 3 weeks before colonoscopy and was actually GLAD for the prep. Now I haven't had a bowel movement for a week. Since the prep. That is with taking the miralax! I just don't know where that poo is going. I am also soooooooooooooo tired. I can hardly stay awake. It is causing a problem at work. I don't think they would like it if I put my head down and slept a little bit, but I sure want to. I also just noticed I have a rash on my face! Whats up with that. I am getting more depressed by the day.

How quickly cortifoam will work likely varies from flare to flare mainly due to the severety of the inflammation, just stick with it, you are already seeing improvements so that's good, it will hopefully continue to get better.
