Does anyone know if there is a correlation between 6-mp and acne? Bratcat has always had issues with acne. But usually if she follows a daily routine (she uses Neutrogena and Avon products) it mostly goes away. She did have a side effect of acne from steroids but she has been off them for several weeks and this acne looks different. Mostly on her lower face (like a beard) and near her eyebrow area. Really specific zits that come that do the icky popping thing. She constantly changes her linens. She is following her cleansing routine well. The only meds she is on is asacol and 6-mp. I did make an appointment at the dermatologist but, of course, he is on vacation this week (does everyone go away except us?). Her appointment is on 2/28. Also, I know there are certain acne medications that UC patients should definitely stay away from.

bratcat was diagnosed with pancolitis October 2006
Current meds:
Asacol - 3 pills/3Xday, 2 tabs 6-mp/1.5 tabs 6-mp every other day

11/14/06 - started prednisone; 1/28/07 - finished prednisone!
3/3/07 - began to taper off hydrocortisone sloowwly! Summer 2007 - slowly began tapering Rowasa. 9/07 -- flaring? Nightly Rowasa. 9/21/07 -- added hydrocortisone enemas. 9/30/07--added prednisone. 10/31--started 6-mp, stopped the enemas. Started lowering prednisone.

Since starting 6mp, I have developed red zit like things on my shoulders and chest. I never had it like that before the 6mp so I believe that it contributed to it. When it gets bad, I just use Clearasil wipes 3xs a day but I'm not prone to acne. I'm more of an infected cyst and boil kind of gal unfortunately!

I use Spironolactone, which is a hormone blocker.

I used to take Bactrim for my ance, but my Gastro thinks it may be what triggered my UC, so I don't want to take an antibiotic.

I have not noticed any acne associated with 6mp and I've been on it for 2 years. BUT -- When you see the dermatologist, ask if the acne could be caused by steroid withdrawal. If you do a search here (or online in general) for perioral dermatitis, you'll find that a bunch of us noticed rashes or acne after stopping prednisone. It's treated differently than plain old acne and mine cleared up in a few months.

If you think that it might be perioral dermatitis (shows up as red pimples around the mouth usually but also near eyebrows, I think) please tell Bratcat that it will get better soon and go away. Do not get freaked by the stuff online that says it's mysterious and it's going to get worse and ruin your life! When it's brought on by steroid withdrawal, you can treat it easily and I swear it will go away! Some days it was worse than others and some days it actually kinda hurt/tingled. I was advised to stay away from astringent stuff. Just very mild, smooth cleansers.

Whether it's normal acne or this other dermatitis, stay from meds that have steroids if at all possible. I think it just prolongs the skin's dependence on steroids to get better. The two skin creams I used were Elidel and Metrolotion.

I remember how horrified I was when it was bad. Hang in, BratCat! :)
