I would LOVE to just be on Imuran. I've been on it for almost two years (in April). I have been on Colazal basically the same time. Can I taper off the Colazal? Or is that a horrible idea?

I'm sure you can taper off it, but why?.Has it been of much benefit to you? What about Asacol, did Asacol do anything for you?I'm not sure if Asacol does anything for me, but my doc put me on 12 a day yesterday anyway. I know many take the 5-asa meds because there is medical evidence that proves they reduce the risk of getting colon cancer in UCers. That is about only reason i take them

I think for the reason stated by Marty should be reason enough for staying on them - reducing the chances of colon cancer. Why do you want to stop them? You can try reducing them though and see if you can tolerate the lowered dose.

I think it unwise to taper off the Colazel.  The imuran was given to get you off of prednisone.  It's only replacing that drug.  Therefore you should remain on your regular maintenance medication until your GI decides differently.

I wouldn't recommend it, Tab. The Colazal does help protect against cancer, and it may be that both the Colazal and the Imuran are doing their part in keeping you well.

I'm just getting lazy about meds. I dream about the days when I didn't have to take 16 pills a day. Thanks for all your input and support:)

maybe you can reduce your dose if your gi buys off on it...i was at 9 back when i was flaring and since getting well have tapered to 4. i know that is low but it has been helping to keep me in remission and 9 was too much of that crap for my body to handle..it was causing me more d. so i tapered to 6 for several months then down to 4. 2 in the am 2i in the pm, everyone is diff though so no guarantees it will work for you. i just noticed that 9 seemed like an awful lot and increased my bms.

I know what you mean about getting lazy with the meds and not wanting to take them. Once we start feeling better, we sometimes wonder WHY do we have to keep taking them. In fact, just the other day I went to take my evening dose and I realized that I had completely forgotten my afternoon dose (according to my pill organizer)! But sometimes we have to realize that it is BECAUSE of the meds that we are feeling better.

I know.....and I'm the one that tells everyone about the time (pre Imuran) I quit Colazal cold turkey and went into an awful flare. I'm just so tired lately I'm grasping at anything to feel better. For some reason I zeroed in on Colazal this afternoon.
