I have posted this on the IBS forum with only 1 response....I am now trying my luck here.

I have been treated for UC since 1987.  I get regular colonoscopies done.  At my last one, I was told that my UC is not presently active, although I still have symptoms that I always thought were part of UC.

I guess what I would like to ask is ...."Are my symptoms indicative of IBS ???"  After a BM in morning, my day is shot !  I feel pain in the abdomen and rectum for the rest of the day, along with no energy.  Consecutive BMs will be more difficult and will make things even worse, painwise.  I havent seen any blood in a while and not a lot of mucous, and I have a soft stool without C or D !

I would really like to hear from anyone having the same symptoms.

Thank you !

Sounds to me like inflamation in the rectum area, maybe hems too.It is very common for UCers to have both Ibs and uc.Even when my UC isn't playing up i have constant IBS issues including the pain that you describe.Does certain foods make things worse?
I notice IBS PAIN IS MORE CONSTANT AND BURNING and the UC pains more acute and intense.

Hi! I have both as well. Personally my IBS acts up if I eat something I shouldn't (fried foods are a trigger for me) or an extremely stressful situation. They are usually lower tummy pain followed by d.

Are you on any meds?

Proctofoam rocks.I would be lost without it.It knocks my rectal pain for six.Maybe if you kept a food diary it would help you identify if there is any other foods that cause you problems.Anything acidic especially tomatoes and citrus juices kill me.Pork is the biggest trigger food for my IBS.I noticed a drastic improvement when i cut out Pork.an oldman that owned a health shop told me to cut out pork because it seems to hurt many with IBS.hE WAS SOOO RIGHT.

Hi Tipoil- I posted a response for you on the IBS site.  I came looking for you here as I felt badly about the lack of response.  Our forum has been slow lately and I don't know why.  So, sorry about that.  There are a couple of people with both on that forum, not many. Actually, we do get some visitors from the Crohn's site too.  Anyway, in short, your sx do match IBS but basically IBS is any sx that cannot be explained by any other medical reason.  And I mean this respectfully :)  Now, I only have IBS (a very good friend has UC so I am unfortunately more familiar with this disease than I'd like to be!!) so I don't know what it is to have both illnesses.   the dominant sx of IBS are normally diahrea (sp.?) and cramping.  I started with a severe nausea, losing 24 pounds in 3 weeks and then struggled primarily with nausea for the better part of 2 years.  I was constantly battling gagging, and dry heaving but had no pain and only on/off diahrea.  3 years later, I have intermittent nausea (that is very tolerable now compared to what it was) and intermittent bouts of severe abdominal pain that leads to vomiting, sometimes explosively. I have only very occasional D and am prone to constipation at times.  I have had every medical test in the book and all are negative.  So, they gave me a dx of IBS.  Anyhow, I really hope you feel better and good luck with all that's on your plate.  carell

Hi Carell:

All the responses I have received so far, including yours, have been of great help.  It does seem like there is a good possibility that I do have IBS also.  As you say, they diagnose it as a lack of any other cause for the Sx.  That is also why I am hoping to get a clearer picture of this, in order to confirm it.  It sounds like you have been through hell yourself...sorry to hear.  I hope your own health gets a lot better.  Thought I would mention that along with my problems, I have never really had much nausea nor any vomitting.  I am fortunate to actually have a great appetite.  I just have to be careful of what I eat and drink and also in what quantities ...lol.   I guess, like in most of these illnesses everyone reacts a bit differently, to a certain point.

Tyvm for your help and god bless !
