so upset and trying to hold it together.  Had blood in my bm this am, I think my hemi is back but I don't think the blood is that because I have been steadily having 1 to 2 bm's a day since Jan and over the past 5 days have been going more each day, yesterday had about 6 bm's and a little amount of blood on the tp.

I have had 3 changes in the past 2 weeks

1. Went from taking pred 60/40 alt days to 40mg a day

2. Stopped eating white carbs (pasta, bread etc.) b/c of high sugars from the pred

3. Taking 20mg of fursomide a day (I saw my ankles last night for the first time in like 6 mos, YAY = )

Could it be my body adjusting from the pred (but I am at such a high dose for that to happen, right?) ?   Also, could this mean that azathioprine is not working?

I can feel my colon, it felt like it did the last time I went into a flare.  It feels a little crampy and the fact that I can feel it, which I normally do not.

Should I just wait it out a week and see if it's my body adjusting to the pred or should I call the doc and get some hydrocortisone e's?

Hi...I'd not wait and at least get the script for the enemas for sure.

Hope this is short-lived.

Beth,

Though it can take several days for the body to adjust to a taper, when I tapered prednisone down from 25mg to 20mg, I noticed a small amount of blood and took action after about 3 days of seeing this as I didn't want things to get worse.  I'd learnt my lesson from trying to wait things out the last time I was on pred.  I began 2 Pentasa suppositories and the bleeding stopped - and have reduced to 1 Pentasa now.  I agree with Quincy about getting the enemas sooner than later.

Stopping white carbs seems like a wise thing to do.  I've been on a low-salt, low-carb diet and am following a low FODMAPS diet (that was discussed on the forum a short while ago).  I strongly feel that as a result of this, the side-effects have been much milder than the last time I was on pred.  The time I had the small amount of bleeding was also after a weekend of entertaining clients where I ate a few heavy meals.  Getting back on low FODMAPS helped get things under control soon.

All the best!
Rio, 31 yr old male - diagnosed with UC in 07/2006.

Alternative therapies for several months (SCD, ayurvedic treatment, VSL#3): didn't work and became anaemic. Canasa, 2 daily: remission for a month then flared-up.
07/07-11/07: 4800mg Asacol (6 x 400mg, twice a day) & Aloe Elite.
Completed first (6 week) tapered course of Pred in 10/07, flaring up since coming off it.
11/07: Switched from Asacol to 12 x 750mg Colazal (3 weeks on it and symptoms got worse)
12/07: Asacol 4800 mg, Started Azathioprene 175mg, Prednisone taper from 60mg - Now on alternate days of 20mg and 10mg; 2/08: added 1 Pentasa x 1mg.

You might also want to try adding in some healing supplements for the gut. L-glutamine is excellent and it also helps with diarrhea. Mucosaheal is another good product for healing inflammation and bleeding.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Therapeutic dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and Mucosaheal. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal.

can I just get those at the vitamin shoppe or do I order online? I'm terrified right now and feel like my options are running out.

You can get L-glutamine at Wal-Mart and I'm sure you can also get it at many pharmacies or health food stores. Sorry you're bleeding again. Have you heard from your doctor yet? Maybe upping your probiotics might help?

Yes, you can get high quality l-glutamine powder at health food stores or where ever body building supplements are sold like GNC.

The Mucosaheal has to be ordered online:
