I had a 24-hour stomach bug last week. Woke up with D and throwing up. I knew it wasn't the colitis because I'd been doing really well and this was nothing like any of my colitis symptoms. Fortunately, it went away after a day. My last stomach bug, 2 years ago, put me into the worst flare of my life so I was happy that this was just a 24-hour thing. I thought I'd get back to normal quickly but no such luck. My colitis is now totally flaring! And I had been making great progress up until now; nearly back into remission.

I spoke with my Dr.'s assistant and I'm back on cortifoam 2x a day. I'm still bleeding and having watery D like crazy. This is the worst I've been in 2 years. I can't believe it. I'm so frustrated.

Usually Cortifoam helps stop bleeding right away but I've been bleeding all week. Plus, after my morning dose I have to run to the bathroom about an hour later. Maybe I should go up to 3x a day since the first dose barely counts.

Anyway, I'm going to talk to my doctor tomorrow for advice, although I'm not sure what else she can tell me to do. Maybe cortenema instead of the foam would be stronger? I can't seem to tolerate any 5ASA meds like Rowasa or Canasa. (Ouch, just the thought of Canasa hurts right now.) My 6mp dose is perfect so I don't want to mess with that.

I guess I just wanted to vent. But I'll take advice too, if anyone has any. Or if anyone has recovered from a stomach bug *without* going into a flare, I would love to know that it could be possible one day.

Cortenema is definitely stronger than Cortifoam & reaches higher. If you're having watery D, though, that sounds viral-- except for the bleeding. Hmmmm. Try eating some plain boiled rice & see how you do. Actually, BRAT is not a bad idea for a day or 2, just add some bland protein. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Thanks, Old Hat. I suppose having pizza today wasn't the brightest idea but you know how it is when you're hungry and craving something... I thought it was a good sign that the idea of it didn't make me sick. Will stick to plain stuff like rice for a bit and see how I do.

Damo123 -- that's quite amazing. Ok, so maybe I need another bug to cure me? It's like the old amnesia trick in the old tv shows when getting hit on the head the second time brings the memory back.

I got the stomach bug right after Christmas. After the worst was over, I started taking frequent doses of Natren's Bifido Factor and recovered very quickly. Normally, stomach bugs can knock me out for a week or more.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Therapeutic dose sulfasalazine.

I've got some stomach bug right now that's causing some nasty D. At first I thought I was flaring, but I also noticed that the pattern didn't follow the usual UC pattern, and today it seems to be going away. Just like you, I am a bit concerned about it turning into a flare but I'm just going to treat it with rectal meds twice per day and hope for the best. Hope you feel better!
Diagnosed Ulcerative Pancolitis

Fish Oil
Vitamin C
