So as many of you know, last night, my son's abcess popped. He was put on antibiotics on Friday and was supposed to see the doctor this coming Friday. Last night he asked me if he could see the doctor today (Monday). His abcess was getting bigger and more painful. We suggested (as per the doctor) that he take an epsom salt bath. Well he was sitting in the tub (singing and splashing away) when he called me and said that his abcess was leaking. Stressed out, I got on here quickly and got some information (thanks everyone).
I took him to the doctor today. He was very glad to see the abcess had popped. He cleaned it out some more. My son also got his first rectal exam! The doctor said it should start getting better now. The antibiotics should help.
My son has a colonoscopy scheduled for next Monday. He is supposed to take Miralax.
Hopefully he will feel well enough to go to school this week and possibly to work too.

That should relieve the pressure and the pain. Glad he's more comfortable now.

Well he went off to school this morning. He has classes until 11 am and then again at 2pm. I think he is coming home in between. He did say he had diarrhea this morning. The doctor said it was a side effect of the antibiotics. Anything he can do to offset that?

Does he take probiotics? If not I would start him on some to help w/ the diarhea brought on by the antibiotics. Keep us posted!

Probiotics are my savior when I have to be on antibiotics; I take an increased dosage until a few days after I finish the abx. Definitely get him started on those.

I remember reading something here about taking probiotics/antibiotics at different times, spaced out. Anybody know what I am talking about?

You do have to stagger them. Otherwise the antibiotics will sweep out the good bacteria the probiotic is adding. PB always tells me but I think it is 3-4 hours either before or after.

I'd say the probiotics should be taken at least 3-4 hours after the antibiotics. This will get the abx out of the way so the pros can repopulate the colon before the next dose of abx. I just finished a double course of Zithromycin, taking the antibiotic at bedtime and the probiotic as soon as I got up. Made it through with no D.
