I read a news article recently about the former Japanese PM, saying that he quit his job due to UC, and thought that it was terrible that UC had affected him in such a manner.

However, I then realized that the even bigger message from this is that even though he had been diagnosed with UC from when he was 17 years old, and had regular flare-ups, he managed to still have a lengthy and successful political career, and even became the youngest Prime Minister of Japan.

Just thought I'd share.
Rio, 31 yr old male - diagnosed with UC in 07/2006.

Alternative therapies for several months (SCD, ayurvedic treatment, VSL#3): didn't work and became anaemic. Canasa, 2 daily: remission for a month then flared-up.
07/07-11/07: 4800mg Asacol (6 x 400mg, twice a day) & Aloe Elite.
Completed first (6 week) tapered course of Pred in 10/07, flaring up since coming off it.
11/07: Switched from Asacol to 12 x 750mg Colazal (3 weeks on it and symptoms got worse)
12/07: Asacol 4800 mg, Started Azathioprene 175mg, Prednisone taper from 60mg - Now on alternate days of 20mg and 10mg; 2/08: added 1 Pentasa x 1mg.

Kudos to him for being so open about his UC. I liked his line about being depressed when seeing a bowl full of red.

Thanks for sharing!

Yes, it's important for public figures to be more open about having illnesses such as ulcerative colitis, so that there's increased public awareness about what UC involves - and hopefully then, more funding towards finding a cure.  Another public personality who recently mentioned having ulcerative colitis is Bob Schieffer, from CBS News.
