Has anyone had a second opinion for the diagnosis? If so what is involved? Do they normally do another colonosocphy?

I switched GIs last year. My new GI had all my records transferred so he could review my colonoscopy. He did not do another one. We basically went over my meds, symptoms, etc.

I got a second opinion and will soon be getting a third, because I was not happy with either of my first two GIs. My second GI made me get another colonoscopy even though he was in the same hospital as my first one and had all my records. If the third one wants me to get one, I am going to say no. I would definitely get a second opinion if you're not completely happy with your current GI.

I had a second opinion when i was first dx'd ten years ago. I was flaring badly and he did do a scope to see for himself what was going on. I picked the doctor that i was most comfortable with. Haven't felt the need to have another opinion since. If i get to the point of surgery i will have 2 or 3 other opinions before making a decision.

I currently have 3 GI's "working together" I had all my records transfered and the film from my colonoscoy copyed from when i was first diagnosed and in the hospitital. It was great becuase now i have it for my records as well. ( i just signed a formed and they handed them over and i made copys) It is hard to have that many doctors but I need it since i go away to school, and then one and home, and then a specialist who I like alot and is very respected in the field (he is the one that i generally call, but becuase he is so far away its impractical to have him be my only Doc.) So it is nice becuase i can talk with all of them about my diffrent options and medications. I would suggest getting a 2nd opinion, what can it hurt?! They didn't need to do a colonoscopy becuase they had the film. Although I did have one of my Docs say that if i would have come to him when i was first diagnosed and he say a colon like that, that he would have remove it right then! So i'm glad that didn't happen... its always good to hear what others have to say especially if you are not happy!

my second opinion just reviewed the photos of my scope and perspcribed next steps, telling me that if it didn't work he would then rescope me, but not yet. one thing I did, that my second GI said was super helpful, was type up an extremely brief timeline of my treatment to date, saying when diagnosed, and all the different meds I had tried, and when. so that caught him up on my case. when he took me on as a new patient, he then had my files transferred.

I've been through six or seven GIs over the years. Recently, when I had unexplained pain and thickening of the bowel wall on the RIGHT side and my GI shrugged it off after doing a scope of the upper GI and a flex sig (neither of which examined the area in question), I went to another GI who did a colonoscopy.

If you've already had a full colonoscopy and want a second opinion, ask for copies of your records to be sent to the new doc. There's no reason to go through that twice unless it's been a long time since your last scope.
