As magical at steriods are, I would of course like to get off them. My "keeping things tolerable" level was 20mg last month. Now, thanking to 6MP (50mg) kicking in some, so I'm down to 15mg. Good, good. I hope a higher dose of 6MP will lower it more, but is there anything else I can do? Been taking fish oil capsule, not sure that is having much impact. Enemas aren't so effective because my UC is not only distal. I'm taking probiotics, but I'm of the opinion that they just keep away bad germs and otherwise don't do much for healing. I haven't seen much effect from diet, though I am avoiding red meat, too many raw vegatables, and too much fiber.

Is anything else worth trying? Aloe? I can't think of anything else. Anything that can cut even 2.5mg off my daily steriod dose would be worth it.

Thanks!
Ben, 38

Here is something my doctor pointed out to me which he would like me to try:

Retarded release phosphatidylcholine benefits patients with chronic active ulcerative colitis

I'm thinking about it. Don't know where to get them though.

Ben - have you tried cortfoam yet? or rowasa? I don't know if it can get down your prednisone, but I know that for me, it has helped me SO SO SO much, and I too have more extensive disease. Both are rectal meds. I do cortfoam in the AM and Rowasa in the PM. huge help. Cortfoam has some prednisone in it - I think equivalent to 2 - 3mg - but because it is rectal, doesn't get in your whole system, and is safe for long term use. may be helpful to you. good luck.
30/Female/NC
Pancolitis dx 3/07
9 Colazal a day (was on 12 Asacol/day, but suddenly got sick from it)
150mg Imuran/day (steroid dependent, reached this dose 9/07)
Cortfoam in AM, Rowasa in PM (is working wonders for me thus far)
Various vitamins, bit of fish oil, a probiotic.

Make sure your omega-3 supplementation is high enough or it won't do you much good. Your probiotic dose also needs to be pretty high in comparison to what a "healthy" person would require. Also keep in mind that natural therapies don't generally work as quickly and dramatically as steroids do.

You may also look into l-glutamine and Mucosaheal for gut healing.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Therapeutic dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and Mucosaheal. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal.

I've started taking some Adrenal Gland support supplements. Won't directly affect the colon, but will hopefully give my suppressed adrenal glands a boost.

Rectal meds! It took Imuran AND Rowasa to get me off of steroids last year. The inflammation STARTS in the rectum and moves up from there. When that next "twinge" of flare starts, I'll be calling the doc for rectal meds to soothe it before it gets anywhere.
Pan-colitis and GERD diagnosed May 2003

Asacol 12 per day,  Azathioprine 75mg, Aciphex, Effexor XR, Forvia and a Probiotic

There are great suggestions!!! I can try a 5ASA enema, have some in the house. Dakotagirl or USinNC - how long do they take to start working? Princesa, how much fish oil and probiotics are enough? I am taking 1200mg of Omega-3 a day, and one PB8 pill a day (not sure how many billion bacteria are in that).

Kspace5000,
Check out this website for phosphatidylcholine.

http://www.phosphatidylcholine.net/

There are several different types/strengths, etc

I'm not sure if its the retarded release formulation quoted in the article.

demchim, thanks for the website. Do any of you know any actual stores that sell delayed release phosphatidylcholine tabs?
