I had follow-up appointment yesterday with dr. since having colonoscopy 2 weeks ago. I have a pretty severe flare-up.  After colonoscopy he put me on cortifoam...very little success with that. He now has put me on prednisone 40 mg. 3 in morning 1 at night for 5 days then tapering 1 a day for 5 days ect for a total of 20 days. My first dose was at 5:50 this morning. My question is basically what can I expect? Also my heart feels funny like it is having an extra beat at times. Is this normal? Is this what a rush of energy feels like? I am so tired as have not been sleeping very well. I wake up at 3:30 every morning and can't get back to sleep. Will cortifoam cause this? I used to be able to sleep good! I understand pred. will cause non sleeping. I am very depressed as I am sooooooooo tired now and not looking forward to the next 20 days.

Pred can cause a feeling of fluttering in the chest or an increased heart rate. The last time I was on it, I felt great, but it affects different folks differently. If sleeping is a problem, you might ask your doctor if you can take only one dose in the morning.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Thanks, I am not one to call the dr. over every little thing and I wanted to know if the heart thing is a "little" thing. I guess it is. As far as the sleeping...I will wait to see what the pred does. I just wanted to know if the cortifoam will cause the sleeplessness.

Sometimes the body will adjust with the new medication over time.  You might have more side effects initially and they might wear off.  Though with the prednisone I'd still expect some sleeping troubles, but as you wean they will get better.  Prednisone-definitely a love/hate relationship.

Here are a couple of links on what you can expect with prednisone and what you should be aware of.

Make sure to take at least 1500mg of calcium while on pred.
