Colitis is a chronic disease. Petty sure it will cause some consequences. Your opinions are welcomed!
36 yrs male. From Arizona

Took a lot of antibiotics for my sinus infection caused by allergy, Augmentin and triple antibiotics regimen. Now qualilfy to join UC team.

Dx in 2007. Proctitis only( party of Ulcerative Colitis). Mild Hemorrhoid. Fish oil 2 capules twice a day, helps. Alo Vera sometimes helps. Propolis helped quit bit, but had to stop due to allergy issue.

It's not fatal, of course there can probably be consequences that can lead to it being fatal, but for the majority they live a long life...usually of suffering.

Mortality statistics show that UC causes a reduction of only about a few months in the average lifespan of an individual. We are talking days here, not years. So on average you might miss out on a few months aged 76.2! I'm not gonna worry about that!

Note that this is what happens on average. A small amount of people may develop a serious condition, others may even live longer than the national average. But on average the reduction in longevity due to UC is pretty small and will continue to get smaller with advances in medicine.

CD causes a larger reduction in longevity but still relatively small. I forget the stat quoted. I think it's something in the region of 1 year below the national average lifespan.

If you want more on this check out the World Health Organisations database. They have numbers and stats on almost ever disease known to man!

400-800 mg Asacol a day
Iron supplment,Probioitcs
Balanced Diet (...ish!!), Reduced Stress

Thank you all for good reponses. I will be worried no more at same time making sure routines meds and exam are being done. Life is managed anyway. I have been trying a Chiese med with metamucil and fish oil. It works for me. No mucus, formed stool, use bathroom once a day. Only a small amt of blood noticed. Colitis has different roots. I tried different Chinese med, found this one working for me. People kept telling me Chinese meds have relatively good results on colitis.

It also depends on what other extraintestinal UC-related disease we can become inflicted with....take PSC for instance. It's fatal, but not terminal.

That in itself as well as cancer for some can shorten life-span.

Damo..what are the stats on those who have their colons removed because of UC (only)?

quincy

*Heather*Status: mini flare Dec 28... tapered to every 3rd night
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~5ASA: Asacol (6 daily) + Salofalk enemas (increase for flares tapered to maintenance)
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed
~vitamins/minerals/supplements
~Probiotic 3(Natural Factors Protec) bedtime + 1 (Primadophilus Reuteri) occasionally
