I read a review on webmd for Imuran where the reviewer writes that her doctor mentioned prescribing different dosages depending on whether the insurance company/pharmacy gave brand-name Imuran or generic Azathioprine - the dose of generic Azathioprine was metabolized too well and not therapeutic for her.

Does that sound right?

From what I know, 175mg Imuran should be the same as taking 175mg generic Azathioprine.  I have been taking Imuran and generic Azathioprine at different times so am wondering if someone could offer some clarification on this. Thanks.

11/07: Switched from Asacol to 12 x 750mg Colazal (3 weeks on it and symptoms got worse)
12/07: Asacol 4800 mg, Started Azathioprene 175mg, Prednisone taper from 60mg - Now on alternate days of 20mg and 10mg; 2/08: added 1 Pentasa x 1mg.

I've never heard this, but I always took the generic. It doesn't sound logical, but that means nothing, because we all know nothing about this DD is logical.

My GI explained it to me this way. The FDA allows generics to be 25% stronger or weaker than name brand. Therefore, if you start taking generics you should stay on them, and if what they call 175 mg is not therapeutic for you, your GI will adjust your dose upward and take that dose.
It probably does make sense though to stay on the generics and not go back and forth, to make sure you're getting an even dose.

My son's doctor specifically requests that the pharmacy either give my son Azasan or Imuran, but NOT azathioprine. Something to the effect that it isn't as trust worthy as far as dosage goes.

It's interesting to read from your responses that there actually could be noticeable differences in the efficacy of similar dosages of Imuran and Azathioprine.  I agree that it's better to stick to one type; and that's what I plan on doing.
