For those of you who have been in remission for a while
> 6 months:
At what point do you stop taking medication or stop Remicade/Imuran/Humira?
Also, what does the colon look like after you reach remission? Will a colonoscopy still show UC or does it appear normal?

My last colonoscopy was normal.I think everyone is different regarding medicines. Some people need to stay on their meds to retain remission whilst others can come off some meds. This is something only your doctor will be able to help you with.I personally went through 4 years without taking any meds when i was younger. But that was before Asacol, i now take Asacol when i'm in remission as a a maintenance drug.Plus it is meant to be helpful in preventing colon cancer in UCers.

My last colonocopy was normal, no inflamation, but there were scars where the deep wounds were.

I think the consensus from the medical community is that UCers should stay on maintenance meds continuously. It's been shown to help prevent further flare-ups more than stopping all meds altogether. I know some people have long remissions after stopping meds, but I think it's something to consult with your doctor about.

It took me five years to get into remission. I'm not changing a thing as long as it's working. I believe my chronic disease needs chronic medication to be controlled.
Moderate to severe left-sided UC (21 cm) diagnosed 2001.
Asacol, Rowasa, Pentasa, Prednisone, Entocort, Azathioprine
Colazal,  Remicade, Nature's Way Primadophilus Reuteri.
In remission since April, 2006. Remicade has been my wonder drug.

I cannot drop UC meds, even in remission. Past history shows I would flare again in about 3 weeks. As to your Q what does the colon look like in remission-- this would vary among patients depending on the severity of their UC & the length of time since diagnosis. In the absence of inflammation the colon mucosa should look light tan to pale pink in color & have a fairly round lumen. Some UC patients have visible scarring, though &/or shortening in total length of colon, or thinning of the mucosa that shows up in biopsy samples from colonoscopy. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

I never come off of my meds. As long as things are working and keeping me symptom free, I see absolutely no reason to change - and that becomes even easier now that I am not planning on anymore children.

Diagnosed April 1998 - Pancolitis
Currently on (per day):
Pentasa 4 gms
Imuran 100 mgs
