Does anyone else not really get diarrhea when in a flare?  With me things stay solid but I almost get constipated even though I go constantly (just blood and mucous most of the time).  When the flare is at its peak my "stool" just looks like tomato soup (sorry to get so graphic).  I end up losing a lot of blood!

Posted 2/25/2008 12:27 AM (GMT -6) depends on how low in the colon your inflammation sounds as though your inflammation is limited to the rectum or slightly higher.

Is the Pentasa you're on the rectal enemas or the oral pills?

If you're not on the enemas, you should consider them.

Don't apologise for the graphic description....I think tomato soup explains it well.

The other thing is that the imuran may be reducing much of the inflammation even if it's slight throughout.

When was your last c-scope? what were the results?

Actually, I am going for a scope in mid-March, though after my last lab the gi wants to move it up. Right now there is no tomato soup, but I get that when things get really bad. The last scope I had (last June) showed the UC rounding the bend into the transverse colon.

I think it is usually at its worst in the lower region and rectum, but last time, that area was actually pretty clear as per doc. The area of greatest concern was at the top of the descending colon.

I haven't had a solid stool in years! The closest i get is what I call playdoh poop. It looks like it came out of a playdoh esxtruder (kinda flat, skinny) but then poofs into particles when it hits the bowl. I don't think I am the norm on this though. i also have strictures (bad scarring) so my colon walls are thicker than most making my stools thinner. When I flare badly it is all liquid all the time. From what i've heard D is more common when inflammation is throughout the colon.

I'm going through the same right now.Normally i would just have D with my flares but at the minute i'm alternating between semi solid thin stools to D.But blood and mucous are constant.Tomato soup is a good one, like it:)
I also feel that i'm flaring in my lower colon. Are you having lots of cramping in your lower left side?

Sometimes I'm the same way, sometimes I have a ton of D. The worst is when I'm constipated and it's sooo painful and I feel sick, and I sit on the toilet for like an hour, and then I'll finally pass some solid stool and then 10 lbs of D! I always feel so much better afterwards though hahah.

same with kb5, haven't had a solid stool in years,, its like a sundae coming out from the ice cream maker.... i saw blood, but it is minimal.. and also some undigested vegetables... i still see some green leafy vegggie in the bowl... i.... go to the toilet 2-3 times a day... but i can control it, unlike with what ive read with UC, that they need to use diapers... So is sit considered on remission? ....

Mine used to be solid. then I would have what I called cherry kool-aid stool. I was like that for 14 years, then with this last flare it was all D all the time. Had an endoscope and he said it had not traveled any higher than it was before, but the inflammation was much worse. Actually, I did not even think I was having a flare because for about a month I saw no blood. I thought there was something else wrong, and after months of testing and 3 negative C. diff test, went on the prednisone and got better. I guess my flares are presenting differently now. Lucky me. My "normal" stools are very loose and very thin. I was thinking it may have something to do with the Colazal? Anyone else have really loose stools on Colazal?

Mine is never hard, but never liquid. Normally it's just nice and soft, but in a flare I get what I call "pudding poop." You know, like those Jello Pudding Pops only...well, you get the idea.

We have several people around here who have UC with constipation. It's less common, but it does exist.

lemonhead - Mine are almost always mushy, too. I'm on Asacol and was wondering if it might have something to do with the medicine, but who knows.

I am one with constipation!!! I have never had D. A lot of blood and poo. This can go on for 3 weeks then I get a little out...wormy looking poo. Just had my colonoscopy and hadn't gone for 3 weeks. I was soooooo glad to get the prep! Now since the colonoscopy 2 weeks 3 days now I have not gone. Had some problems last night and did get a little out. At least I am not totally plugged! :-)
