Hi Everyone,
I am planning the 30 Hour Famine at my school this year and I am hoping to participate in it.  I am in remission and have been for about 8 months now. I usually try to eat many small meals because I like to have something in my stomach.  Sometimes I have a burning in my throat if I don't eat regularly.  I am guessing that is acid reflux?  I am worried that without any food in my stomach that it will upset my stomach or cause a flare.  Has anyone here done the 30 Hour Famine with UC?
Thanks for your help!

I haven't done it, but I just think it might be a bad idea. I try not to risk anything with my UC, especially when things are going well.

Okay thanks for your input! I read on the wesite that people that are "experiencing chronic illness or gastro-intestinal disease should not
do the Famine." I still havent decided whether or not I will do it. I would really like to and it isn't until the end of March so I have time to decide... but thanks for your help!

I've never done the 30 hour famine, but I have done 24 hour fasts (only water) during a flare up (actually it was before I even knew what I had but that doesn't change the status of my colon).

I'm no doctor, but in my own misguided logic, how would not eating cause more problems than eating? For your UC that is, not your acid reflux type problem.
Diagnosed UC 12/2007

Folic Acid 1mg x 1/day ~ On going
Asacol 400mg x 6/day ~ Failed (Allergic)
Prednisone 30mg x 1/day ~ On going recent change 2/26/2008
Sulfasalazine 1g x 3/day ~ 2/26/08

That would certainly be enough to warn me off. I've never wanted to risk trying a fast, but in the past, I was underweight and had blood sugar issues that also played into my decision. How about asking your doctor for an opinion?

I would definitely talk to my doctor about that one. It's simply not worth the risk, imo.

Instead of doing the famine my school did a day where a certain percent were 1st world countries and got pizza and soda, the majority were second world and got hot rice and clean water, and the third were third world and got dirty water and cold rice or something like that. Maybe you could still participate but participate as a second or third world country and just have rice and water. That way it wouldnt be as severe on your system. I don't know about you but I feel horrable if I don't eat and really can't take my meds on an empty stomach.

I have a Colonoscopy tomorrow.I currently haven't eaten for almost twenty hours.By the time I've had the procedure done and gotten some food down,it will be almost forty hours.Don't most of us have to do this as a due course of the disease/examination process?I really don't see a problem with it,just don't eat a three course meal as your first thing when you've finished!
