So I had a flare about well, 4 weeks ago now. I have been on Prednisone, now down to 40mg a day. I am still not doing as well as I think I should. I am still having mucous and more trips to the bathroom than I think I should have at this point. So, I really think that there is a lot going on in my rectum. What medications are used for that area besides, Rowasa enemas or say Cortenemas? Is there anything else?

I am on Remicade and I am due to have another infusion on March 11th, however, my doctor had bloodwork done two weeks ago and all I know so far is my white blood count is elevated. I have not been able to speak with my doctor yet. I was there with an appointment to see her yesterday and she was stuck in a procedure and it went to long so I had to reschedule. I am anxious to hear when I can taper more off the prednisone and see exactly what I am going to do next.

Thanks for any replies in advance!

Canasa suppositories...they are 5-ASA drugs like Rowasa. I just started using them daily in the morning about a week and a half ago along with my nightly Rowasa. I think it's too early to tell, but the last two days I only had 1 BM, pretty well formed, and I haven't seen any blood in about a week...(knock on wood...).

There is also Cortifoam, a steroid foam. There is a 5-ASA foam in Australia, but not in the US.

SGRUBB...it says in your sig that you're taking rectal meds already...what exactly and how often are you using them? For how long?

Yes, I did forget to say that part I think. I do take rectal meds now...I do one Rowasa a day and sometimes, but not everyday, a cortenema. The trouble is, I have a hard time holding it in there. I think that part of me is where it is most irritated right now. I had a coonoscopy a month ago and she said that area was bad...as was the entire left side of my colon. Right side looked great. (Would it be the left side up from your rectum? Having a brain fart here...lol! )
I guess what I am looking for is something that might help that does not have so much fluid in there so to speak....I don't know. I just wondered what others did for this.

I am a bit discouraged with my doctor right now. Waiting on them is such a pain! She has been so good to me however I think she is very busy.....I wanted to be armed with information to take in there when I see her again.

Thanks so much everyone for your help.

Hi...well, you can do the Canasa as suggested and do them during the day and the cortifoam at night. Not a lot of fluid with it..should be easy to retain.

You have options.

How long are you able to retain the Rowasa?

Canasa would be the 5ASA suppository. Anucort would be the steroid sup. I've used both.

SGRUBB - It's been my experience so far that it is much, much easier to use the Canasa suppositories versus the Rowasa. It might be worth a shot to try them.

Does anyone know why cortifoam isn't available in the US? My doc that finally, grudgingly, gave me a script for the Canasa gave me 1000 mg. to be used at night and I feel like I need something throughout the day. Can't use the enemas. Just wondering.

SGRUBB - I also have some pretty severe rectal issues - I personally have Crohn's and not UC but the Crohn's involves my rectum.  I was so inflamed a year ago that I could not you enemas, I was first put on Canasa and I didn't find they were working so great so I switched to a cortisteroid suppository (Anucort) and have had quite a bit of improvement with that.  I will tell you it takes quite a while to begin seeing signs of improvement.  I let mine go to far before getting medical attention so it has been a long road to recovery.  I hope you find something that works for you, it is horrible to deal with.  MB

I use the hydrocortisone foam and its really been a life saver this flare, really helps ease the pain if only for a little while anyway.
