Hi all,

My daughter is on 15mg prednisolone 2x a day. I'm wondering if anyone knows the difference between prednisolone and prednisone. I see many people talking about how much prednisone they are on and I'm trying to relate it to the amount Hailey is taking. I'm wondering if 15mg of prednisolone is equal to 15mg prednisone.

Thanks!

Laura

prednisolone is liquid form, prednisone is pill form from my understanding that's the difference and I don't know if it's euqal in mg to one another.

Viewers Question
My wife has Chrohn's Disease. We live in Australia and her doctor has her on 25mg of Prednisolone a day. While in the US, we ran out of her prescription and a Texas physician presribed her Prednisone to get filled in the US. Are these drugs the same even though the names are different?

Doctors Answer
The two drugs are virtually identical and interchangeable. Some physicians prefer using prednisolone in patients with liver disease because of a theoretical concern that prednisone may not be effective in these patients.

I have always been on Prednisolone during any flare.I only started seeing Prednisone when i came here.Prednisolone are pills.I think the change in name is maybe because i live in Ireland and that the drugs were called different things .I found this it may help

Prednisone is inactive in the body and, in order to be effective, first must be converted to prednisolone by enzymes in the liver. Therefore, prednisone may not work as effectively in people with liver disease whose ability to convert prednisone to prednisolone is impaired

A prescription for 15mg prednisone is the same as taking 15mg prednisolone - same product with different names in different countries.
Rio, 31 yr old male - diagnosed with UC in 07/2006.

Alternative therapies for several months (SCD, ayurvedic treatment, VSL#3): didn't work and became anaemic. Canasa, 2 daily: remission for a month then flared-up.
07/07-11/07: 4800mg Asacol (6 x 400mg, twice a day) & Aloe Elite.
Completed first (6 week) tapered course of Pred in 10/07, flaring up since coming off it.
11/07: Switched from Asacol to 12 x 750mg Colazal (3 weeks on it and symptoms got worse)
12/07: Asacol 4800 mg, Started Azathioprene 175mg, Prednisone taper from 60mg - Now on alternate days of 20mg and 10mg; 2/08: added 1 Pentasa x 1mg.
