I went to the GI today and told him that I've been having symptoms the last month, mostly crampy-ness, loose-r stools and 3+ bm's a day. He said it sounds like the UC is acting up a little so he put me on cipro. I took flagyl a million years ago but I don't think I ever tried cirpo. He said it should most likely calm the inflammation down. What are your experiences with cipro? I've already bought a probiotic so nothing funky happens to the bacteria and all that. I'm just wondering what to expect.
Thanks!!

P.S. the GI said that the hemmi-like thing is just a skin tag and NOT associated with crohn's. THANK GOD!

I've only used Cipro for a sinus infection which then started me with watery D - my life before probiotics. I know others have had good luck with it for infections.

I still don't understand how antibiotics calm UC... But usually when I use Zithromax for a sinus infection my UC behaves.

Good Luck!

I don't understand it either!! He told me that cipro and flagyl are made to target a certain kind of bacteria while amoxicillin and stuff used for strep etc kill pretty much everything.

My PC doc put me on Cipro when I first had bleeding. It helped me for a couple of weeks, then I got worse again. I've since been on it for a urinary tract infection. I seem to be able to take it without throwing myself into a flare.

I know Cipro is one of the drugs sometimes used for C. diff, so maybe that's what your doctor was referring to.

I was in a huge flare and GI gave me cipro and enema's about the same time not sure which helped me but it was a jumpstart toward my remission. I think someone told me to make sure I ate yogurt (to ward off possible yeast infection, can't recall for sure though).

Its definitely not a "flare" flare. I've just been off for a month or so. Hopefully it will work without making me worse.

Cipro has a side effect of constipation for some people. That might be part of the rationale behind it.

I just had both a couple of doses of Cipro and Flagyl in my IV last week while I was in the hospital. Haven't seen the doctor again since being released to fully understand why I had both, but I am feeling better since then (and have started prednisone since then).

I got c-diff from Cipro. Please be sure to take a good probiotic -- and even more often than usual.

Great...now I'm freaked out!! I didn't even think my UC was acting up. I figured it was stress or dairy...
