Hello,

I'm off to Gambia (Africa) soon and was wondering if there any malaria pills I should avoid taking due to taking ASACOL and prednisolone?  Is it ok to take Larium?  Thanks.

I think your question would best be answered by a doctor who specializes in infectious medicine. Your trip sounds great! Have a good time.

Or your pharmacist (chemist?) should be able to check on this for you.

I think I took Malarone (1/dy) and seemed to be fine with it. I know some can make disoriented, but only need to take it 1/wk or something, so it is worth asking about the options.

Hiya,

I took Malarone too when I went to Africa and was absolutely fine. I was told that it was generally the best one that had the least reported side effects so that was recommended to me then...quite pricey though, worth shopping around on the net..

Enjoy Africa! :)

I took malarone when i went to SA and Mozambique and experienced a major flair (i was on asacol at the time) but it very well might have been something else that caused it. Word to the wise, always drink imported water even if people say its safe--safe for people generally is not the same as safe for colitis! Next time I go I plan on taking the once a week pill, i'd rather halucinate than have a flair.

I took chloroquine for 6 weeks while on the Asacol when I was on it, and didn't have a problem. I would definitely talk to your doctor though.
