I went on pred a few weeks ago to stop the never-ending bleeding, and halfway through a "pulse" type taper I got suddenly soooo much worse with D, cramping, urgency - the works, even at night.  I increased the dose (to start over) but after a week at 40mg I'm not seeing any improvement and feel horrendous.  Is the pred making me worse or do I need to give it more time?  How could I be worse on pred than before I went on it?  Of course I'm going to talk to the doctor but I would love to hear your collective wisdom.

you're situation sounds like me 2 months ago.  i was becoming refractory to prednisone(meaning prednisone isn't working anymore.)  if you see your doctor, she may try different treatments.  i'm med free today though!!
Pharmacy Student, Class of 2009.  Diagnosed 8/99.  Suffered for almost 10 years.  I am currently on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and am nearing remission.  I feel fantastic!    I have lost so many years to this disease.  I decided to become a pharmacist to understand these drugs, and to help fellow sufferers of IBD.  My goal is to open up a pharmacy and take care of my patients(particularly explaining what the drugs do to you), compound special medications, and have a great practice. HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THE SCD DIET? IT HAS PUT ME IN REMISSION AND I PLAN ON GETTING OFF THE ASACOL SOON TOO!  (In remission since 2/15/08)
Meds 3200 mg Asacol, 2.5 mg Prednisone.  Doc wanted to put me on 6-mp or Remicade, but I refused to take the medications!  For me, diet works...

It took a long time for pred to work for me if it even has, not sure if it's that or the azathioprine, would like to see what others say.

i have found that being on 40mg of pred. is just bad for my system. I was on 40mg for about a month and was scared to taper becuase i was still having so many problems; increased # od bms, alot of blood, pain, urgency. But my doctor advised me to taper to 35mg and after about 4 days i was feeling much better and am now still sucessfully in that taper with no problems whatsoever! So maybe you have the same type of situation. I also found this to be true last year, however i flared again pretty bad when i got down to 15mg and was started over back on 40mg and started the cycle all over again. So maybe the best thing for you would be try taking 35mg daily and see if the lower dose helps you as well!

Just wanted to give an update. My GI increased me to 60mg prednisone. After 4 days, so far not much improvement (if any) - bms 9-12+/24h with killer cramps and blood. The only other option at this point I'm told is to get an IV at the hospital to make sure it's getting in my system. And if that doesn't work, Remicade or surgery since imuran takes a while to kick in. I'm not sure how I went from pretty much ok a month ago (well, except for the bleeding) to this. I should probably also add this is my first time on prednisone, so I have no idea if it works for me or not - so far, apparently not. I finally went on it after bleeding for 10 mos. or so to try to get into remission. I don't really want to be on Remicade the rest of my life, and I also want to get pregnant in the next couple years. :-(
