I have had Pan Colitis since 2000. I was wondering if bread triggers flare ups for anyone. I have tried a couple diets from books I have read by Jordan Rubin and Elaine Gottshall and they both stress eating a NO CARB diet. I think I have had some relief by limiting carbs but was wondering if anyone else has had success. Please let me know. Thanks

I eat bread--double fiber by Narture's Way with no problems. I did SCD for one month and went back to eating low residue until I could add more fiber and eat like I did before diagnosis. Before I was even diagnosed I did the Atkins and the South Beach Diet--I did feel good on them, as I lost weight. I'm now on Weight Watchers and feel just as good and am losing weight, too. I liked the SCD, but didn't always plan ahead enough to make it really work 24/7. Are you taking a probiotic or any meds for the pancolitis? I have found that with meds (Lialda and Canasa) and eating foods that I know don't bother me (i.e. milk--lactose and even lactose free) work pretty well. I think you'll find "to each his own" on the board. What works to eat for some, doesn't work for all. It is trial and error for each of us to work on but when you find out what works--it makes the UC a little less bothersome!

i am on the SCD and have found success with it.  i am remission and i am off all medications.  i started the diet the 2nd week of january.  life is so much greater now.  i can actually walk to class w/o having to worry about a toilet.  i have lots of energy too.  I really believe in the diet!

actually, you have it wrong. gottschaul didn't say you couldn't have carbs. you can but they can't be complex carbs(like breads, pasta, and rice). fruits are welcome in abundance!!

Hi...food doesn't cause flares....it would be best to look at the whole picture and recognise that some foods can exacerbate some symptoms that would seem to be directly related.

Just remember that if you cut out carbs, they are usually good vitamin B sources...make sure you are getting enough through supplementation.

No generic evidence to suggest food causes flare but no generic evidence to suggest food doesn't cause flares either. Situation is unproven at the moment either way.

Food can definitely make your symptoms worse so you should experiment. Also you may have IBS issues on top of your UC and then food most certainly will cause you issues.

Experiment. Do some detective work. Find out what works and doesn't work for you. Everyone is unique with UC. What holds true for one person may not fold true for another.

Since you are new, I would recommend doing more search on this site for connection between diet and UC.(while everything else is wonderful, search is not the best on this site) Some of the terms to look for would be SCD, anti-fungal diet, ect. You will find that everyone has a different opinion on this. For me, anti-fungal diet was/is a great help in getting my symptoms under control. Best of luck.
