I have started this probiotic called VSL#3 my second day today. Has any one else used it and how successful is it? Besides the bloating is there anything else I need to watch out for.

Thanks

Have had colitis for the past 5 years doctors label it a moderate pan colitis. The bowel movements don't scare me but the blood does. Worry about getting cancer all the time.

Vets already use it for colitis in cats : )

I guess colitis is cats is very close to that in humans and most of the treatments are the same.

No one else in my family has IBD...except my cat. Go figure.

A few years ago I tried 3 packets per day of VSL#3 for 5 weeks. I notice absolutely no difference with it. It was a total waste of money. Different people have different results. You may have better luck than me. Good luck with it.

Yes, it's true about cats, dogs can also get IBD, either crohns or colitis...strange but true...cows get johnes disease which is also similar, inflammation of the intestines...would suck for cows since they have like 4 stomachs, must be a real pain in the gutS for them eh.

Hi!  I tried it for 2 or 3 months and I can't say anything conclusive about it.  In general I was doing better with all the different probiotics, I'm sure, but not sure definitively with this brand.  However, VSL3 has some of the best studies out there specifically for UC: something like 50-70% remission or at least a major improvement.  What I remember is that the duration was 2-3 months and the dose was about double the amount they say to take on their website (3 trillion microbes or 8 packets, if I recall).  I think the "medical food" form of this is basically this high in number, but the price is about the same as getting the equivalent of the OTC version, if I recall.  I could probably dig up the abstract, if you like.  It is also good to supplement with a good prebiotic, which helps the good bacteria to grow and the form is usually soluble fiber (FOS, inulin, pectin, etc).

The gas is normal as your body adjusts to the new microbial balance.  I know it is expensive, but I did talk with my flexible spending provider and they said I could write it off if I got a note from my doctor saying it was needed.  I'd love to know the boundries of that!  There are a lot of supplements I would enjoy tax free.

Hey--I've been on it for 2 months, and besides a flair I've felt pretty good--but then again, i'm on a lot of drugs! I recommend starting at the lowest dosage and working your way up. I started with two at once and got cramps, went down to one in the morning and am now at one in the morning and one at night. My GI highly recommended it. Good luck.

I started it in February 2007 and started with 3 a day. My frequent BM's disappeared and for almost a year no flares. For some reason I am predisposed to a flare in Feb! so I am dealing with one now. Good luck to you!

Mellie keep a note of what you eat in the month of February because that used to happen to me in November ( took many milk product sweets) ever since i have put a check on that it has helped.
