colonoscopy bioppsies

what exactly are they testing for when the do a biopsie during a colonoscopy for crohns/colitis?

They're checking the depth of the colon lining that's affected (which helps to tell if it's UC or Crohn's) and also looking for dysplasia, a pre-cancerous condition.
Moderate to severe left-sided UC (21 cm) diagnosed 2001.
Asacol, Rowasa, Pentasa, Prednisone, Entocort, Azathioprine
Colazal,  Remicade, Nature's Way Primadophilus Reuteri.
In remission since April, 2006. Remicade has been my wonder drug.
