I am new to this forum, I am 33 years old female and I have been actively bleeding since Nov 2007. Visited my GP who said it was piles and not to worry. By the end of Dec the bleeding was getting worse and happening even if I passed wind and I was needing the loo more urgently and on occasions it smelt unpleasent, I was also waking in the night with urgency to pass blood and clots. I returned to Gp who said she would refer me. I saw a consultant in clinic and after a painful sigmoidoscopy (not sure if he tried to go to far up) he said it look like severe proctitus, Since then I have had a colonoscopy and it appears that I have 15cm affected therfore probably classed as proctitis. I have now started on 1g Pentasa suppositories and 400mg iron and waiting on an urgent referal to see a gastroentroligist. Does any one know if I will see a quick improvment with the pentasa and is this likely to be the treatment I will stay on?

Thanks

Hi, welcome to Healingwell :) I'm so sorry you are having a rough go at the moment. Pentasa or any 5-ASA can take a while to become affective. And many don't realize that when they are first diagnosed that the colon doesn't heal overnight. And sometimes it takes time, patience and right med/diet/supplement combo. Please take the time to educate yourself on your condition. You can use the resource section here on HW or you can go to www.ccfa.org

Welcome to HealingWell, Mitch. As Red said, educating yourself on this disease can help a lot. We find that there are things that help a lot of us that most GI's don't mention.

One of the things you can do to help your colon heal is to start taking a good probiotic. These contain the "good" bacteria which are normally there to maintain colon health, but which are often deficient in UC. I believe you're in the UK from your posting, so I'm not sure what is available there, but your chemist could probably tell you. A lot of us here take Culturelle, Primadophilus Reuteri or VSL #3.

Take care, and keep taking your medication even if it doesn't seem to be helping at first. As Red told you, healing takes time.

Egads, sounds so familiar!

Everything everyone has said so far is pretty true. Meds usually do take awhile to kick in, probiotics are a good thing to add to the mix, etc. The only thing I would add is if you start to feel better, don't cut down on the meds and don't stop them. Be sure to consult with someone first.

Good luck with this new "journey". We have all been there and this is a great place to ask for advise or to vent.

I figure you were given Iron because of the blood loss. Just be careful because Iron supplements can cause rock-hard stool or stomach upset. And welcome to the forum. Sorry you have to be here.
