From the green hills of Ireland, I hope everyone has a Happy St. Patricks Day!

Well we all go into bars and drink. Then we all run around with silly green hats and pretend we are leprechauns. So really no different than a typical Irish weekend!!

The sad thing is that the others nations of the world have far better and more dignified celebrations of St. Patricks Day than we can muster up in Ireland. <Sigh>

The American parades are fantastic.

Damo -- is it really true that the Irish don't eat corned beef and cabbage and that this is an American tradition? And if you don't, is there a traditional meal that you eat for St. Patty's Day? Just wondering. :-)

Yes. Theres lots of "rules" like that in Irish society. You see the clergy dominated Irish society for many many years. The people were told things like "you can't eat meat on a Friday" etc etc. This was the norm in Ireland up to say the 1970s. Thankfully we are moving away from such clerical dominance and are pretty much on a par with most other western countires now. But "rules" like this are still important to older generations. And altough I'm sure most people would disagree with such rules you still have to respect the people who adhere to them - in many cases the older generations of Irish people.

No specific meal that everyone eats. Though Irish Stew is quite popular and you'll have lots of "minced meat" based dishes followed by rendentions of "Danny Boy". Speaking of which lets leave the last word to the Muppets....

Celebrated St. Patrick's day a week earlier at the South Side Irish parade here in Chicago.  From what I remember it was a good time. :-)    Lot's of family gatherings and Irish pride.

It's the 2nd most important date in Ireland. The first being June 12th 1988 when we beat England 1-0 at soccer in Euro 1988 and no Irishman nor Irishwoman was seen in work again for at least another ten days!!!

Thank you Damo, very informative. Still, many of my older relatives live by the clergy rules; and really, I think it's kind of cool and I respect them for that, just as all of you do over in Ireland but whew, they were some pretty tough standards to follow. That being said, Happy St. Patty's Day...and here's to a good pint and a good rendition of Danny Boy. :-)

I heard on the news this morning the first St. Patrick's Day parade was actually in the U.S. in New York City.

Yes and Danny Boy was written by an Englishman who never even visited Ireland.

It's hard for me to accept that on our national holiday not a single government minister is in the country. Each one is "visiting" other nations abroad. Can you imgaine July 4th and not having the American president in USA!!!

Happy Saint Patricks Day! Celebrated it Sat nite had some delicous corned beef and cabbage and had leftovers yesterday, mmm, mmm, mmm!

We are searching for shamrocks at work today........they usually have fun little prizes, like dunkin donuts gift cards, yeah sometimes my office is a little too close to the show the office.

Happy St. Patrick'd Day!! Went to the parade here in South Boston, Massachusetts yesterday, it's amazing how many drunk people I saw before noon. Most of them were actually pretty funny, having a good o'l time for themselves. Then we also enjoyed a corned beef dinner also...Yummy!!

Ok guys I'm newly diagnosed with pancolitis and just discharged from the hospital (was in 13 days!) I'm flying high on steroids and remicade and i feel normal. Can I really eat corned beef? Seriously... we are in the crisis / visitor / sick mode here... people are dropping off meals and today is corned beef and cabbage!! I would love to eat it!!!

Charmin, you can try the corned beef but I would personally stay away from the cabbage. Cabbage is my downfall too since I love it, but it doesn't love me!

Happy St. Patrick's Day, everyone! 

I remember as a kid, each year going to school on this day.  Mom and I would always make a shamrock for me to wear and I'd ask her every year, " Now what am I, mom?"  She'd say, "you are 1/4 Irish and 1/4 scotch Irish which makes you 1/2 Irish!" 

I was and still am always very proud of that!!  I especially think about it each St. Patty's day.

i didn't plan ahead so didn't pick up stuff to make corned beef. but you gotta make something for st. patty's day so i just made some soda bread! it is very tasty.
