I am a new member to the forum, and I want to say that I appreciate how helpful and informative everyone here is.  I thought I would throw in my "two cents" to new patients of UC and my personal experience with Prednisone effects:

Very suseptible to infections, increased heartrate, increased irritability, increased energy (yay!), increased appetite (and subsequent weight gain), pudgy face ("moon face") which will go away after you stop taking it, trouble sleeping, night sweats, and increased urination at night.  The night sweats are the worst, but I have discovered that if I get up to urinate within 3-4 hours of going to bed, it stops the sweats for the rest of the night.  I get up and go whether I feel like I need to or not; it really helps. I get a sinus infection every time I go on Prednisone, so wash your hands often and try to avoid touching your face while out in public!  Hope this helps those of you whose doctors don't really explain things as well as they should.  Again, these effects are just personal to me and may not be what you experience.

And I have a question.  Has anyone ever experienced their UC symptoms getting worse from using Probiotics?  Right now I am on Culturelle Caps.

Hi Sunny,

For some reason, whenever I have taken probiotics my symptoms have gotten worse.  I tried VSL#3 and Nature's Way Primadophilus Reuteri in varying dosages.  I'm not sure why that happens; especially as I would expect probiotics to make things better.  I'm still considering whether I should give Culturelle or even Digestive Advantage a try.

Rio, 32 yr old male - diagnosed with UC in 07/2006.

Alternative therapies for several months (SCD, ayurvedic treatment, VSL#3): didn't work and became anaemic. Canasa, 2 daily: remission for a month then flared-up.
07/07-11/07: 4800mg Asacol (6 x 400mg, twice a day) & Aloe Elite.
Completed first (6 week) tapered course of Pred in 10/07, flaring up since coming off it.
11/07: Switched from Asacol to 12 x 750mg Colazal (3 weeks on it and symptoms got worse)
12/07: Asacol 4800 mg, Started Azathioprine 175mg, Prednisone taper from 60mg - Now on 10mg; 2/08: added 2 Pentasa x 1mg on alternate days.

I'd suggest giving any probiotic at least 2 weeks. At first, it does mess with me too but my body adjusts and comes out of it.
started Prednisone & Asacol on Thursday 10-4-2007

currently OFF Prednisone

VSL#3 gave me problems, but I tolerate the Primadophilus Reuteri.
