I know it has very varied results.
Been in remission for a year now. Eventually, I want to go off drugs, even though Asacol is a class B drug, its still a chemical and i dont want to be on it for life.

Does it make sense to begin the SCD diet if the meds are working just fine?
I don't want to throw caution to the wind and just drop all meds to begin this un-scientifically proven diet. Although, i do want to eventually go off them.

Anyone been in a similar situtation? Has the diet even worked for you?

Some have had good results, others not. I'm sure if you search, you can find a lot of discussion of this topic in earlier threads.

I have never tried the SCD diet, some members here swear by it. I have been on Asacol and got tired of taking so many pills and lowered the dose myself and stopped seeing my doctor, only to become the sickest I have ever been. In my experience with UC, if you find meds that work for you, then you should faithfully continue those meds. Quitting the meds usually results in a return of symptoms, and for some weird reason the meds that once worked no longer work at all or cause bad side effects suddenly. Then you are stuck trying the stronger drugs till possibly nothing works anymore and then you're looking at surgery. That had been my experience, anyways. I know how hard it is to stick with the meds and so many pills a day. And I know how much I have hoped I could be ok without meds. Some very lucky people have been able to get off their meds, though. Luckies. Sorry for being such a downer. I have had a tough time with my UC. Welcome to the forum.

Princess -
Thanks for sharing - yes, that's what I'm afraid of. THoguh, I'd like to discontinue meds, they are working right now and it seems like a dangerous idea to stop, given those stories. I'm most concerned with pregnancy (one day) and being on meds. Dr.'s beleive in "a healthy mom means a healthy baby" and i agree too. It's just the meds I'd like to be off...

Thanks for your support. I am staying on them for now, just exploring this interest.

If it's eventual pregnancy you're concerned about, I suggest that you look up some writings of Sunanda Kane &/or Uma Mahadevan. Those are 2 IBD subspecialist gastros practicing in the U.S. who focus on pregnancy issues. On this site you can find posts by members like Expecting226 & *Jen* discussing their own experiences, in fact *Jen* went into treatment with Uma Mahadevan this past fall-- as a result of discussions on this site! / Old Hat

OK DUH, the blonde here just had a serious blonde moment!!

My mother has been experimenting with recipies from this book. I don't have time to cook because I work long hours.
So she travels in from South Jersey to Manhattan to do this for me.

I am trying to follow it and its hard for me to adjust (and get an appetite for the food since I have stomach problems too) but it is a very helpful tool!
