Hi,

During a flare, do any of you have an upset stomach at times? By upset stomach I mean discomfort in your actual stomach. At times before I feel the need to go to the bathroom I will feel pain in my stomach which will  then turn into urgency to use the bathroom. Also throughout the day today my stomach has felt very unsettled, and strangly enough food seems to help settle it.
Thanks for your help.

I usually have that problem when I am in a flare. I thought I was the only one who experienced that. I usually feel a lot of pain in my gut as well as pain in my stomach. I've never discussed it with my doctor...I just figured that it is a part of UC, something that I'll need to deal with. So, no you are not the only one.

I used to have that problem all the time, especially in the afternoon. Ginger is supposed to help with nausea, so I used to sip on a cold gingerale throughout the afternoon and that seemed to help.

Sounds as though you're flaring ...urgency is a for sure symptom. Are you going many times a day? If not, you're just in the early symptoms and should start rectal meds asap.

I have nausea often....and very often when flaring especiallly with rectal only inflammation.
Dicyclomine (Bentyl/Bentylol) which is an antispasmodic helps a lot.

I too prefer to eat when nauseated...foods with more salt actually.

Hope you consider the rectal meds.

I have those same symptoms during a flare as well. I've never actually vomited... just have a lot of discomfort and nausea.

I also have gastritis in addition to UC, and I used to take Nexium for the gastritis. I had one flare while I was on the Nexium, and didn't have the upper stomach discomfort that time. I'm assuming the Nexium controlling the acid made the difference.

expecting 226- congratulations on your new baby

I also get nauseaus....I thought it was hormone related as it only happens certain times of the month, but maybe it is UC related.  I also never vomit, but sometime I wish I would, I think it would make me feel better.

I think it's common to feel the way you do SMK, I would chalk it up to symptoms of a flare...some people (like me) don't get gut ache issues even when flaring, although it is more common to have them than not.

Do try the ginger though, ginger is really good for GI issues, you could even take it on a regular basis, I think you can get it in supplement form, but the real thing is always better, eat a little ginger everyday and see if you notice any benefits with symptoms.

Ginger is good if you're not pregnant,..it also comes in tea form.

I think maybe because it will neutralise the acid in the stomach....a half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water...sipped...will do the same thing. I've had it said it will "sweeten" the stomach...and it works amazingly.
