Hey All. Maybe nobody cares about this but me, but out of respect to all of you, and because I REALLY value the forum, I just want to clarify when I post as someone who has UC vs. when I am posting for research for my writing.....

As some of you know, I am doing some freelance writing for the New York Times about Ulcerative Colitis. I feel really strongly that all of you, as well as this forum, can be a great resource for research, so I want to be able to ask questions on the forum that pertain to my writing. However, I also want to respect your privacy and the general culture of the forum. So, I just wanted to let you know that anytime I am asking a question related to my NYT work, I promise to always put that very clearly in my post, so that you can chose whether or not to participate.

Conversely, any post that is from me that does not clearly state is being used for my NYT work is unrelated to my research and is instead about my personal experience with UC, questions I am hoping you guys can help me with to keep me from going crazy...... so, for what it is worth, I just wanted to throw that out there..... -Loren

I think it's wise of you to make that clarification. It could certainly prevent misunderstandings or worse.

Thanks for the well defined difference.

I know your work will bring more information to the general public. I also hope that any one out there who thinks s/he is alone in their battle with UC will read it and realize they are not suffering alone.

I hope that your article(s) are picked up by other papers or news outlets. We can only benefit from more exposure about UC and those of us who have to go thru the ups and downs of it.

Joan - thank you for the generous offer. I don't know how far the NYT will go with its coverage in terms of how many features it will devote to UC, but it is a great idea, and one I will definitely kick around my with editor.

As for the good suggestion of running the pieces in other papers, that actually won't be possible. The Times, unlike many (though not all papers) pays a lot more than other papers because it buys exclusive rights to its pieces. So, a journalist can't resell their coverage to another paper if it was originally published in the NYT. But, because the paper does have a pretty wide readership, it will hopefully still get some good coverage.

thanks, all, for your encouragement and support. it makes me feel really good to know you all support it.
