In my earlier post, I explained my husband is suffering with a c-diff infection. He's on 250mg vancomycin 3 times a day, and canasa twice daily + probiotics (VSL#3, Culturelle, Florastor). He's completing day 2 of vancomycin treatment, and he is showing no signs of improvement.

Folks who have some experience with vancomycin, can you please tell me how long it took for you to see improvement from your c-diff symptoms? He's really suffering - can't eat hardly anything, is experiencing elevated heart rate (today < 100 beats per min, but still in the 90s, which is kinda high - I think it's because of the stress his body is under).

Please please, folks who have experience with c-diff and vancomycin, can you tell me how long we should wait before we add something else to the regimen to help ease his suffering?

Also, would a course of pred be useful now to bring down his inflammation? I'm sure that he's in this much discomfort primary because of the inflammation caused. We're working with the vancomycin to kill the c-diff, so would going on pred help to ease his discomfort at the same time?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks so much

I'm out of my office yesterday and today; sorry I didn't reply last evening.

Give the vanco time. You can imagine, your hubby's colon is probably very inflamed and ulcerated from the c-diff. He should have quite marked improvement after a few days (not one or two) but it will take a bit for his gut to heal again.

Hang in there!!!!

Thinkin' about you and your husband.

I had c diff 2 years ago. I started with Flagyl which did not work for me and I got worse very fast. I had already suffered a couple of weeks before I finally started Xifaxan (sp?). It took about a week before I saw an improvement.
I was severly dehydrated and got fluids twice during the episode. I'm not sure if your husband is experiencing pain in his back/rectum, but I had a lot of pain associated with it.
My UC started to kick in with great force about the time the c diff started to slowly get better. I immediately started Pred after a colonoscopy. It's a bad deal! Keep him hydrated, it makes a world of difference on the pain! And let me warn you. It took me about 4-6 months before I felt normal AT ALL after my experience.
It was worse than delivering my 10 1/2 lb son 6 years ago! In my opinion he should start to feel a difference in about 4-5 days.....IT FEELS LIKE FOREVER THOUGH!!!!! I KNOW!
Hang in there! It will get better! If he does see an improvement within 5 days, get him back in!
good luck

I've got to be out of the office again today, PV, but I'm thinking about you and your husband, wondering
how he's doing on the Vanco.
