you can google "kilauea volcano" if you want more detailed info.

basically the volcano we live on (and about a mile from the crater that is spewing gasses) started spewing a lot more gasses a few days ago. the gas contains sulfur dioxide which creates vog which is very nasty stuff to breathe.

for now, the wind is carrying it away from populated areas, but the winds change often here and it is not uncommon for us to be blanketed in vog for several hours at a time.

they are talking about possible evacuation if the winds do change and the gasses remain as strong as they are now.

not too big a deal since i won't have to pack up pictures or documents etc (they are not expecting an eruption)... i have an extra pair of clothes for each of us and 5 days of meds for me when we go to town.

so, why am i stressing? what do i do with my cat??
leave him inside, which stays fairly protected from the vog, but if we aren't allowed to come up here for several days it could get in and he'd be trapped.
but if i leave him out and let him run, he's not likely to outrun the wind anyway and i may never see him again!
aaaahhhhggg!! while we are in town, we are a good 45 minutes away from home, so we may not have time to get up here and get him. i can't take him in to the shop with us every day.
i'm definitely leaning toward leaving him inside.

this is doing NO GOOD for my colon so please send some anti-volcanic thoughts our way!!

I would be stressed too. I would try to take my cats or see if you could board him, though everyone else is probably doing the same thing.......If I had to leave my cats, I would leave them inside.

Oh wow, that is horrible! Yes, I would leave him inside but make sure you leave enough food and water for him to survive the week. I have done that in the past when I have gone on vacation when I had cats.

I agree it is a terrible dilemma! I would feel the same way about my cat. He can usually be fine on his own for several days. He could even go for more, if I had the automatic cat litter box. I'd let him stay at home where he's most comfortable, but would probably still call the vet to see if he could be boarded, just in case. We'll keep your cat and you/family/community in our prayers. Definitely keep us posted!

Oh how traumatic! I agree about seeing about boarding him. Or, if you leave him inside, can you leave a fan running to keep toxic gases out? Would a fan even do enough?!?!?

Ugh. Sending thoughts your way!

thanks so much for all your happy thoughts and prayers!! much appreciated.
so far we're doing fine here and the wind and rain are in our favor.
and i'm freaking out a lot less than i was this morning. :)

also i may have a couple options for my cat but we'll have to plan ahead. my main concern is if the air takes a turn for the worse and we're in town but the cat is at home. but we'll just see how it goes.

we're supposed to have at least a week of good wind.
i don't know if the emissions will get lesser over time or how that works. so we'll see.

thanks all!
