I cranked out a kidney stone the other day about 1/16" or so in diameter...  I had massive pain in my side for about 30 minutes then it subsided.  I went to work and peed into a paint strainer...plop out came a stone.  Any other UC people get kidney stones?  This is my 4th.  The 3rd had to be blasted out.  1 and 2 passed.  It has been about 10 years since #3.  Think it could be dehydration or related to any UC meds like Asacol?
33 yr old male. UC for 14 years. 5mg pred (tapering off), 12 pills Asacol per day, Dicyclomine (for cramps), 0.5 - 1mg Atavan per day (anxiety), Fish oil pills, Culturelle probiotics. Recent Endonasal brain surgery to remove non-cancerous hormone producing tumor on pituitary gland (And I am still more afraid of my UC!!)

Hi...never had them, but I know a few people who did.  One required surgery to remove them.

It seems there are different kinds from different causes.

Hope you start to feel better soon.

Have you seen a doc about them?

I seem to get a pretty big one every 2 years or so. Seems that people with UC are at greater risk because they don't expel the calcium out of their poop, and it is reabsorbed into the blood stream and deposited in your kidneys. The first one was torture. After 2 days in the hospital, had to have the old basket retreival surgery.....horrible. Stent put in and then after 10 days the stent was removed.....that was worse than the whole kidney stone. The second one was 9mmx5mm, and I had that one lithotripsied. I am now on 25 mg HCTZ (diuretic) that will, we hope, remove all the calcium out of my body. We won't know if it works for a year or so. I am actually going back to the urologist today. Will let you know if he changes course.
diagnosed with left-sided UC in 1997.
Currently on 10mg Prednisone
12 caps of colazal

lemonhead...sounds excrutiating!! Hope you don't get anymore!

redbull...never had shingles, I hope I never do. They can happen if you've had chicken pox way back when and if you've been exposed to chicken pox, had an extreme series of x-rays, been on immunosuppressants, been very ill with a very low immune system..etc.  I know of one woman who gets them often..yikes!  Hope you don't get them again.

I've had surgery 2 times and I currently have about 8 stones kicking around (but not big enough to cause pain supposedly). I think it's related to the UC for sure. I guess we metabolize calcium differently and I can't think the steroids help at all.
29 years old; diagnosed since 1997 (but I've had it forever)
Current meds:
-Prednisone 7.5 mg!
-Re-trying Imuran; I'm at 100 mg now...but it's making me so tired!
-Asacol 12/day
-Failed Remicade (8/06-8/07)
-Calcium + Vitamin D(for my steroid-affected bones)
-Prenatal vitamins (for the extra stuff, not for pregnancy)

The outcome of my urology visit is Renal tubular acidosis.....either cause by my UC meds or the UC itself causing malabsorbtion of calcium. I am on HCTZ (diuretic to fluch out the calcium) and a citric acid/potassium pill as well to replace the potassium that will get flushed out with the diuretic and the citric acid to prevent more stones from forming. He thinks with this course of action I will not have any more problems. Knowing how horribly painful stones are, I would recommend you get a great urologist, have a 24 hour urine done, and all the blood work. This may be your issue as well. I have been on Asacal (12 a day) for 10 years before switching to colazal (9/day) now. I know that has something to do with it. But I need the colazal. Do you ever feel like your body is betraying you one organ at a time???

It's definitely a conspiracy!!! lol!

I've never heard of renal tubular acidosis...have to check it out for curiosity sakes.

I'm pleased to hear you have a diagnosis and are in good hands. Makes a lot of difference...considering all the pain you've already been through!

Be well,
