Hi Everyone, First I am sorry tjf for posting in a reply on your site when I meant to be here. Hope you will be well soon. I am 49, diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and Gerd. My family Dr. had been treating me for hemmroids for 1 1/2 yrs before, I do Not Blame her, it was my fault for not going to her as often as I should have. So I have several ulcers and flare ups. My question is does anyone have lower back pain. I am suffering really bad with lower back pain and my GI, which I now have is great, but she has reassured me my back pain is not associated with my problem. My family Dr. has done x-rays and could not find anything, no arthritis, nothing. She said I have the spine and back of a 25 year old. She said it is all mussle and gave me Percocet and Flexeril. This helps if I stay doped up, which I Hate that feeling and I am one of those people that hates taking meds. So I was just wondering if anyone else has back pain. I am new here but what I have read today from other people makes me thing this will be a awesome site for me to learn about this desease. I have been told it is Chronic and is for life, so the more I know I think the better I will be.

Where in the lower back does it hurt? Is in between your hips or in the lower back above the hips? And btw, welcome to Healingwell :)

A few sites that I recommend you visit is www.ccfa.org also the resource section of this forum to become educated on Uc. The more you know, the less scary it will be.

RED_34, Thank you for the web site. I went there and read for hours. It was really helpful. It spoke of joint pain which I have, but not on back pain. My back pain is just aboye the hips, and sometimes more to one side then the other. It hurts worse at nights, like I get stiff or something. then when I get up and move some it eases up, but never really goes away. I also have bad neck pain, which is a feeling of stiffness. Dr. says its mussle's, but did not say why my mussles hurt. Said it could be the way i sleep. So now I sleep with a pillow between legs and on a $30 foam pillow and still have pain. If u know more let me know and again Thank you,

I have back pain frequently, elephantlover. The pain about halfway between the top of my crease and my side is from sacro-ileitis, one of the "extra gifts" that sometimes comes with UC. My physical therapist helped me with some exercises for this, which will relieve it some.

When I'm flaring, I'll get terrible pain right in the middle of my back, just above the crease. I refer to it as "that horse standing on my back," because that's what it feels like to me. That pain just doesn't go away until my flare eases up. I used to get the same back pain with really bad cramping with my periods. Now I get it when my proctosigmoid UC flares. I associate it with inflammation in the lower abdomen or pelvis.

And welcome to HealingWell!

Are you taking Prednisone? When I'm on Pred, I get pretty bad back pain, but usually between the shoulder blades and feels like a pulled muscle--everyone is different. Also, when I'm flaring, repetative activity will make me sore, e.g. gardening, if done too long will cause me to be sore or stiff. I think it's all interrelated, fatigue, etc.
Dx Ulcerative Colitis 1999; IBS; GERD; CP: Asacol x3 x3/day, Rowasa, Proctofoam, Prilosec, Prozac, Endocet (as needed), multi vit, probiotic, fish oil, calcium 1200 mg./day, Prednisone (off/on, unfortunately).

Hi Elephant Lover! I also am a lover of elephants.. so darn smart aren't they?

Anyhow, in response to your post, a lot of time back pain is associated with our abdominal muscles. Our abdominal muscles are the core support for our back and if you don't keep those muscles in shape... Lower back pain, poor posture, and even pain up into the mid back is very common. If you have been tested for different things such as arthritis or any type of other condition and they have been ruled out, I would suggest starting on a program to build up your abdominal muscles. I was very suprised to hear that even though your doctor said it was all muscle and no medical problems were found, that the remedy was to give you drugs for pain and that's it.??? You may be very suprised at just how important the "Front" muscles have on the "Back" muscles. If you think this may apply to your situation, please contact me through my email and I'd be happy to suggest an excersise program for you to start on. (I used to work at a gym and have seen this situation many times before) I bet if you follow a good abdominal routine, strengthen then up quite a bit, your back pain should diminish to a more comfortable level within a few weeks!

Let me know if I can help :)

Judy just commented on what I was going to suggest. I also have sacroiliitis which is inflammation of the sacroid joint. This joint is what holds everything in the hip area in alignment as well as the lower back. Mine is pretty severe and I go in for xray guided steroid injections. But one of the things that helps is excersize like what is suggested. As for your neck, yep, I have that too LOL However I have a pinched nerve in my neck which doesn't help. I don't know why I have that pain either other than a twisted vertebrae in addition to the nerve damage - and once again, excersize really helps with that along with cold or heat wraps (whichever one feels better for you).

Hi Red, Susie and Judy, Thank you so much for your kind responses and web sites. Have read and learned a great deal. I went outside today, first really beautiful day, 75 degrees, and watered my flowers and fooled around and my back feels better. So the exercise is definitely part of it and I think the heat helped it. But I am also surprised that neither Dr. could come up with anything other then drugs for pain. I am making an appointment in the morning to go back and see about going for some pyhsical theraphy and learn some back exercises. I think this will help me also. I also have irisitis of the eyes and I am in a flare up now. Right eye looks nasty. But again they say they will watch it, that I might have to go on steroids for awhile. I don't need any other drugs on enough now. Please keep in contact and any info is greatly appreciated. Thank you all again !!!!
P.S. Susie, yes I love elephants and do not know why, lol. I think they are very graceful for there size and are beautiful. I also collect them. Always going to swap shops, yard sales, the good places for a real STEAL, lol. Have found some great elephants. Take care all and stay safe!!!
