i just read the response to the lung disease question and it made me nervous, my daughter has her 2nd cough in 1 mont, zithromax was given at school the 1st time apparently the dr there said it was bronchitis, but this time the dr doesn't hear anything but said if it doesn't improve try the zithromax- he said there are a lot of respratory infections going around- do i need to have a chest xray ordered?
thanks

Please - I understand your concern - A few things to note...

When the guts aren't in great order, it's hard for the body to fight off infections.
Prednisone also increases the chance of infection.
The lung complication that was discussed is EXTREMELY rare.
It can take a UCer a longer time to recover from illness, especially if the UCer was recently flaring or is currently flaring.

That being said, I would keep an eye on it. The repiratory infections going around this year are very tough. I've had a couple of co-workers who needed shots of antibiotics and prednisone along with a z-pack to get over them.

I hope your daughter feels better soon.

Hi, PLEASE! It's great to read that your daughter has been able to attend 2nd semester at college. RE cough: it sounds like the college-based doctor is on the right track. There HAVE been a lot of respiratory bugs going around the last couple of months. A couple colleagues of mine were coughing their heads off for a few weeks after the worst congestion passed. I would go with what the college doctor advises for now. It's unlikely that your daughter has anything rare, & if the gastro scheduled her next exam for June, it sounds like she's getting control of her UC. When her GI symptoms abate & she has a couple months with generally 1 bm daily that will indicate that she can change some of the meds. Keep in mind that UC flares can take months to subdue; that's the reason to err on the side of caution when reducing/eliminating meds. I think you have reasons to be optimistic. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)
