Damo123 - I'm SO thrilled i read your thread about Asacol-itis. I was going absolutely crazy these past few days!!
Just couldn't figure it out. I have never had heartburn in my life. These past few days I tried to be really aware of my body and what it was doing. I normally am so busy running all day, I don't stop to think unless it really bothers me.
These past few days I had a burning sensation in my throat and that sensation was connected to burny burps and a bloated feeling. I looked up Reflux and GERD symptoms and don't really have them all, just the burn, burp and bloat. It's livable with, I guess, though now that I'm aware of it, I'm VERY aware of it and the more I think about it and am aware of it, the more uncomfortable it is!

I forgot to take my meds today and felt totally fine! Right after i remembered (at midnight) and took 1 dose, i felt that burny burpy thing again....groan...
I'm gonna experiment by alternating taking and not taking the Asacol and see if it makes a difference.
I hope it's not from the Asacol. sad

Most importantly, is there something I can do to help make my body more responsive to the medecine but without these side effects? Or what can I do to minimize them

Any ideas??

I'm experimenting as well! Let me know how you get on!

I'm not knocking Asacol. I'm sure it's a womnder drug for so many. But I just feel it's "knocking up" my tummy!

"knocking up my digestive system too..."
I'll post about updates.

Also, how are you doing the experiment? Every other day, week?
I'm trying every other day, then every few days....

I've done 2 days on and 2 days off....you know i think my stomach (not my colon now) needs just a complete rest from oral asacol....so im going to leve it for 1-2 weeks and then visit my doctor.....asacol may well be helping my colon but i feel ive neglected my tummy and now it needs a bit of attention

has anyone ever noticed or had any problems with the Asacol tabs not being completly broken down in your system? When I peek in the bowl to check everything out I've noticed like little asacol colored pieces. This happened when i was in the hospital in Jan as well, and i've really noticed it ever time for about 2 weeks now. And in the hospital they said that it was normal and it happens and not to worry. I was like i have IBD how can i not worry if something is not being broken down! I don't eat foods that may do that so why a pill?! I havn't had anyother symptoms to note recently. But just think it is odd.

Hey guys, I just wanted to suggest instead of going on and off your Asacol that you reduce it a little at a time and see if that helps.

Little pieces are fine. I used to pass the whole tab without any meds being released... needless to say Asacol just made me feel worse all around.

I felt terrible and was loosing my hair when I took colozal , but after hearing all of you talking about asacol, I wonder how much of it I was absorbing anyway? I am so glad to be off of it now.

Lizzielu - about seeing the pills looking undigested, when first dx'd, saw that happening alot, maybe bec. stools were looser. Dr. and credible medical sites said that's normal with Asacol. It may seem like it wasn't digested, though in reality, it may just be the shell of the pill while the medecine was removed already. If you look closer, you'll probably see that the tab is cracked and theres some creamy white stuff around it, thats fine...(pardon the graphic-ness). Also, some pills may be more digested than others...

Gardenerjames - its prob a more prudent approach to decrease amount of tabs than intentionally not take them. I'm testing to see if i can eliminate that the Asacol causes it, hopefully this will just be a short term experiment.

Damo123 - how's your Asacol-itis experiment coming along? How are you feeling?

I've been off it for a good few days and no real burn, burp or bloat feelings....now for the "on it" part.

*OMG - I just got it - Asa-Colitis......lol*

Haha..this is a great post! I don't get the burn/burp, but I DO get the bloat/gassiness. I know "flatulence" (i hate that word) is a side effect, but it's not very attractive. Any suggestions on controlling it?? It would be especially nice if it were a bit more predictable...say on dates?

Also, I'm in relative remission (I'd say about 85%), and I still get whole Asacol pills in the toilet sometimes. I think it's normal--I've also read that it's okay on the medication label, and I know I don't feel any worse or better, so no biggie.

:),

Well I've been off it for about 10 days now and as much as I'd like to say that Asacol was causing my GERD and other discomfort I have to admit that I have seen no noticeable change. So no evidence to suggest that Asacol is the culprit though I'm gonna stay off it for another bit yet.

I did change my diet and since I cut out the fried food and candy (we say sweets on this side of the atlantic!) my GERD has been better.

well, as of now, ive been taking the Asacol and its been ok. None of those 'Asacolitis' symptoms. Dr. actually reduced me to 6 pills a day down from 8, citing 'good behavior' in my colon as a reason.

I've been on an off Asacol now for a few weeks. If I'm on it I suffer really bad heartburn, taste in my mouth, bloated stomach, loss of appetite. When I'm off it I'm fine. For me Asacol seems to cause a problem.

Actually it is now getting to the stage that even 1 Asacol will induce the above symptoms. Moreover I'm starting to get itchy skin, brain-fog, headaches whenever I touch the med so i'm wondering am I bordering on an aspirin-allergy rather than an aspirin-intolerance.

salicylate sensitivity i'd say. and since you are having those symptoms, check out foods that have salicylates in them. If you adjust across the board, maybe you'll have relief from symptoms.

Found this site that will be helpful.
