I'm taking a poll...
Anyone on meds and are not having any side effects and are in remission? If so, what worked for you as far as meds and how long have you taken them for?
I had the Rocephin shot and 2 weeks of Omnicef, this helped with my bloating and digestion. That was 4/15/07
Had Cipro and Predison for 10 & 5 days, 7/3/07
Colonoscopy & Endoscopy 7/27, Left sided colitis and near cecum (mild)
Had a shot of steriods for my ear inflammation 8/31
Stopped Colozal 10/1/07 was on it for 7 weeks, side effects
On Standard Process supplements, trying a new protocal from a
natural path as of 9/10/07

I *think* I'm in remission. I just had a minor blip the other day but now I seem to be fine again. I am on Colazal and 6mp but since I've been on them for so long, I no longer have side effects. Sure I had them when I first started but once my body became accustomed to them, they went away. I have been on Colazal for 3 1/2 years and 6mp for 1 1/2 years.

I was in remission for 8 months last year with no side effects. I was on 50 mg of 6mp.

Ah, the good old days... I remember them fondly.
UC for the last ten years
Current Meds: 6MP since 2006, Cortifoam
Past Meds: You name it; I've tried it. (Asacol, Colazol, Pentasa, DiPentum, Rowasa, Canasa, Cortenema, sulfasalazine)
5ASA drugs don't work for me. Canasa seems to make me worse.

I'm back in remission now, and have been for about 6 weeks. My meds are in my signature and should be pretty current. I can't think of any side-effects, either. I'm even back to drinking my daily coffee with no problems. Hooray!

Does true remission mean you can eat anything you want? I guess with or without medication.

Dx last January - been in remission since July/August - was on prednisone for 2 months, then 6MP for 5 months - now only 4 Asacol 2x a day. Feel great, no side effects, can eat whatever, no major abnormal reactions to foods.
(until last week, had heartburn-like symptoms possibly from Asacol, currently testing that theory)
Dx: Dec. 2006 with UC
F, 23, NYC
Thank G-d - Prednisone then 6MP, Rowasa and Asacol brought remission
Now Asacol 4tabs 2x a day.

Yep, I do 4gm oral 5ASA daily and two 5ASA foam enemas a week. Last flare was April last year. I have never noticed any side effects from the 5ASA drugs.

The oral 5ASA did a lot of the work but adding two enemas a week seems to have really kept me in remission (I started those last June/July). I love rectal meds!

I can pretty well eat what I want, although I do keep to a balanced healthy diet and eat lots of fibre rich food. That seems to keep my stomach settled and happy (I have never been able to connect food to flares, fibre just gives me better bms).
Left Sided UC
Maintenance Meds: Salofalk tablets (Asacol) 2 tablets 4 times daily (4gm total) plus 2 Salofalk foam enemas per week.
Flare Meds: Salofalk enemas and/or Colifoam
Oat bran 60grams daily, Metamuscil and multivitamins

I'm in remission on Azathrioprine and have been (with a "bump in the night" now and again, controlled by rectal med additions) for about six years.

Sporadic proctitis since about 1985. Mother had J-pouch surgery 1983.
DX'd with clostridium difficile in 2000. Pred, two courses of Flagyl, then Vancomycin finally got rid of it. 2001 colonoscopy dx'd left-sided UC. . Treated with prednisone, Rowasa, Asacol. Asacol not working, switched to Imuran. Three small flares since in 2002, 2005, and 2007, brought under control with steroid and Rowasa enemas. Lap Chole performed October 26, 2007, after gall bladder attack in June, '07.
Daily meds: 100 mg Azathioprine and 225 mg Effexor XR (for chronic, longstanding depression), many vitamins and Primadophilus Reuteri

I am in remission and have been since July 2007 when I had a minor flare during the first trimester of my pregnancy. Prior to that, I was in remission for almost two years.

I have always taken only the medications listed in my signature line. I have never experienced any side effects from these meds. During a flare, I typically use an 8 week taper of Prednisone. I experience very few side effects from the Pred either - usually just some insomnia and a hot flash here and there.
Proud new mom of a beautiful baby boy!
Current Medications:
- Asacol (4 pills, 3x per day)
- Rowasa (1 enema daily, as needed)
- Folic Acid (1 mg, 1x per day)
- Calcium (600 mg, 2x per day)
- Prenatal Vitamin (1x per day)

Im in remission with no side effects from drugs or colitis at this point.  Imuran is what worked for me.  I had taken prednisone for a long time before that and tried to maintain remission with Asacol or Rowasa.
I've taken Imuran for a few years now FAITHFULLY.
Currently in remission since September 2004!!!  I am on Imuran 150 mg and am LOVING life!

Hi, THEREAREMIRACLES! I'm in remission since Oct. on 3 Colazal daily after catching a flare-up in descending colon quickly last July. Prior to that mini-flare I had been in remission for 20 months, a record for me-- thanks to reduced-dosage Colazal plus an occasional (generic) Rowasa. My gastro convinced me several yrs ago that it's safer to be on med than winging it. I cannot stay on full daily dose Colazal longer than 10 weeks, though, because my eyelids start to puff/itch. Julee70 recalled having a similar reaction at one point. The best course of action is to find a knowledgeable IBD gastro who will see you through the rough times/help you determine the safest & most effective med(s) to take longterm. How are you doing with the burning butt? / Old Hat

My son is tapering off of Prednisone, down to 10 mg. per day.  He has also been on 6mp for about one month. HE IS DOING GREAT.  So great, I don't want to jinx it.  We just got off of a spring break cruise and he ate anything he wanted. Chicken caesar salads, pizza, lots of "good foods" like prime rib, grouper, and ice cream with butterscotch sauce at every meal. It was awesome.  He looks tan and handsome, instead of pale and skinny.  He is also taking tons of supplements from a PhD nutritionist that I have not listed in my signature.  I don't know which piece of the puzzle is doing the trick, but I will take the positive improvement.

I'm in remission. 2 Lialda/day. No side effects.

I do not eat what I want and am very careful about what I put in my mouth. (To avoid gas and cramps) I haven't had any of the big D (or constipation) in a while. The bleeding has stopped thanks to a month on prednisone.

4 colazal/day and probiotic, remission since last spring, occassional joint pain, anemia, minor headaches, i dont however tend to think they are side effects just secondary uc symptoms.

- 29 y/o male residing in Northern Virginia, US
- Indeterminate UC diagnosis in April, 2006 - symptoms came on sudden and drastic resulting in a year long battle to get things under control - symptoms are now stable
- Approx 8 mths into the ordeal a very painful fistula appeared - it is now stable but not completely healed
- Plan to get tested for Crohns in the short term future
- Completed 3rd Prednisone taper on 4/13/07 - tapered from early January 07 through mid-April 07 after being hospitalized from a bad flare with severe anemia & joint pain
- During Apr-May 07 suffered through 2 mths of a non-stop migraine which went away after remission was achieved- attribute this possibly to long-term Prednisone use
- Joint pain has cleared up but do have occassional minor arthritic pains
- Currently in remission and enjoying life again
- Started on 9 Colazal/day but have tapered that to 4 and plan to hold here indef.
- Supplements include daily multivitamin, Fish oil & Primal Defense Probiotics 2x/day

Hi.  I haven't posted in about a year.  I'm thinking remission as well, I am on canasa supp., 4asacol a day, 6mp 75mg., probiotic, vitamin, fiber and prozac.  I haven't been this well in four years.
I was curious about your rocephin shot for bloating and digestion.  I am having trouble with horrible bloating and gas for about 2weeks and can't tie it to any one thing.  Can you tell me more?  thanks.
