I was dx January 2006 with UC.  On Colazal, prednisone, Canasa, and Imuran.  Only found any relief on prednisone, however my gastro does not like to keep patients on pred. for an extended period.  Off of pred. and on Colazal and Imuran I was as bad as I was prior to my diagnoses and in meds in late 2006.  Put on Remicade in January, 2007.  Remicade was, and maybe still, is my miracle drug- I no longer lived in the bathroom and I was able to work and live without UC being a daily burden.
Last Remicade infusion was 2/21/08 and as of today I am totally having a nice little UC flare.  I have had a rocky last two weeks with just going to the bathroom a few more times than normal and feeling a little off.  Last two days, I am going to the bathroom in the excess of a dozen times and I have a very small amount of blood.
I have surfed the UC forum since my diagnosis and know that a lot of you all are on Remicade or have taken it in the past.  Have
you all ever had flares on Remicade? How long did they last? Has Remicade just stopped "working" for anyone?
I am completely freaked that this is it for Remicade working for me and I know that my medication options are almost all used up.
Any advice or words of wisdom would be appreciated.

When I used to get Remicade, sometimes I would flare-up when I would get past about 4 weeks from the infusion. My doctor moved it up to every 6 weeks and that worked better for a while. Then it started not working so well every 6 weeks so I got a higher dose which I believe caused me a delayed reaction. I hope this is just a glitch for you, I really do... I know what you mean about running out of options.

I honestly don't know what to tell you....like princesscolon, the Remicade stopped working for me. At first, I started to flare within 5-6 weeks, so we bumped up the dose. That worked ok for about 2 infusions, then I'd start to flare at 6 weeks...hold out miserably until my 8 week infusion, feel better for about 5 weeks... went to 7 week dosing schedule. Flared up at 4 weeks, tried 6 week dosing schedule... now, my last infusion (at the highest dose possible) was March 3rd & I'm flaring right now! Having many bm's a day, much mucous, much blood, up 3-6 times a night in the bathroom. I won't have any more infusions as I have surgery scheduled May 7th, & it's not good to undergo surgery with the Remicade in your body. So many people on here have had great success on Remicade long-term, but it seems as if once it slows down, it pretty much stops. does that make sense? Like, if you are finding that you become symptomatic before your next infusion is due, it seems like it sorta steamrolls from there. It totally sucks- running out of options is right- I mean, what is next, really? I could've tried humira but my GI felt the same thing would happen- fairly short term relief. Studies on folks who've built up resistance to Remicade second his opinion, so..... good luck! Call your doc & talk about shortening your infusion schedule and/or bumping up your dose- that should at least buy you some more time.
diagnosed with UC '02
