Hello All, and many thanks for the kind thoughts.  I have had quite the time of it, and still am not home.  I am currently 2 months from my hospital release to the day, and about that for  my last of seven surgeries to initially correct Charkot Disease of the legs (a form of severe osteoporosis with dozens of fractures of the feet and lower legs - usually caused by diabetes - which I have - but usually found at a later age (50 in December)).  We believe that it was brought on by 7 years of prednisone to control my UC.  I had seven operations as I contracted MRSA while at the hospital and needed a tissue graft from my abdomen to seal the foot to save it.  Since then I have been recovering from that.

I had my last Remi in late January, and have been off 6mp as well.  I am taking Asacol, but am in a bad flare right now.  Worsened by my inability to walk yet (past a few steps anyway), I am reliant on a private nursing aide to help me use a bed pan.  I had nearly 20 bedpan events yesterday and needless to say it is hard to keep an aide.

My spirits are low because of the UC flare.  I have been on Vancomyacin, a very powerful antibiotic on IV and had it removed just 2 weeks ago.  I was hoping that would improve my urgencies, but that has not been the case.

My Infectious Disease Doc just ordered a stool test - looking for a bacteria in the colon which can survive when all others have been killed off - both good and bad.  I am on VSL3 at 4 sachets a day.

We have spoken about that bacteria in this forum here - I have forgotten its name.  Does anybody else remember it?  I have a doctor appointment on Friday, but the lapse of memory is killing me!

Although I was originally going to restart Remi now, the MRSA has thrown a monkey wrench into those plans.  I heard my Infectious Disease doc wanting to wait 6 months - that would be December.  I would loose my mind if I had to wait with this flare until then.  The same with all immino-suppresants - fearing the MRSA would raise its head again requiring amputation and possibly worse.

I am on Xanax in a big way, and pain killers (more for the binding effect now) but they seem not to be working as they had.

So I wish I had better news.  My wife has been a saint - putting me in convalescent care condo rather than a nursing home - also draining her retirement savings for me.  Hopefully soon I can just pay the rent here and loose the round the clock nursing aides (about 14K a month).  Good incentive for learning to walk again.

I am sorry for not being here - Even though I have this laptop, it has  been very difficult for me to sit and internet.  Also I hope that will change - but doing the bedpan thing with help nessissitates being in bed.

Please try to remember that nasty colon bacteria's name for me - that is driving me absolutely bonkers - hehe.

I hope all here - both old and new guys are doing OK.  I miss you all and pray for all of you as well.

With all my love

bob

Bob,

Perhaps it is C-Diff that you are trying to think of? That's what comes to my mind.

I am so very sorry to hear about your troubles and medical problems. I hardly know what to say. If I were there I would give you a HUGE HUG and hold your hand. You are such a wonderful and inspirational person to all of us. We hate to hear that your are suffering.  I know that MRSA is nothing to mess with, so the immuno-suppresants and the Remicade would definately be out of the question for relief from your UC. Have you tried using a retention enema yet to get some relief? I know that it is hard to use an enema when you go so often, but it could calm down the swelling and coat the lower part of your aggrevated colon.

You and your wife are both so strong - even tho you might not recognize it right now. You will get through this and be back on your feet some day. I'm praying for you and sending good vibes your way.  Please hang in there and keep us posted. You have a lot of people that are pulling and praying for your recovery.

Oh Bob, I'm so sorry to hear you're having so many issues. No need to apologize for being absent- we certainly understand and just worry about you, but you need your strength to recover and I'd rather you put it towards that than hanging out here all day :) Figures the colitis would decide to make an appearance during all this, talk about being the most inconvenient disease ever. I hope there's SOMETHING they can do to help get it under control. Obviously since the prednisone got you into this mess that's out of the question, do they have any other ideas for you?? Do you think the Vancomyacin actually made things worse? I know some people can't tolerate antibiotics, but I don't know much about that one. Have they done a scope to see how far the inflammation goes? Maybe enemas or suppositories would help.

As for the bacteria, C.Diff sounds like it might be the one you're thinking of but I could be wrong. "C. difficile isn't confined exclusively to hospitals. It's also a growing problem among otherwise healthy people. And although the infection can usually be controlled with antibiotics, virulent strains of C. difficile are now appearing that resist treatment with common medications." They usually prescribe vancomycin for it though so I wonder if it could have survived if you were on IV doses of it for that long.

Shrek/Chewy/Bob,

I'm sorry to hear that you're still recovering, but you've set an example for the rest of us by keeping your spirits up...you are what I consider to be a "Young Lion" while I sometimes consider myself to be a "Toothless Lion". Your trials remind me of "Job" when he suffered, but what's important is that it's only for a time...sooner rather than later your body will heal itself and you will be better.

Bob, it's great to hear from you. I'm really sorry you've had so many issues with the bad bugs, hope they stay away now so you can think about getting flare under control soon. You're a brave guy, and your optimism is inspiring. Keep healing and we'll hope you're soon home.

Thanks All! C Diff is what I was thinking about. Now I can rest easier! Will give an update on Friday when I see Infectious Disease Doc (He's running the show for now!). Interesting data point - my surgeon who I visited yesterday said that my tissue graft for my foot is "mine" now and that an immuno-supprecant should not hurt it. Sounds like at least one vote for Remi, but he did defer the decision to the ID Doc. So let you know Friday.

Bob,

Glad to hear you are making it through this.  I don't reply much and pardon my ignorance of your specific situation.  With all that you have wrong would it be possible to have the colon removed?  Im sure this has been discussed and maybe you are not a good candidate but it seems one can only suffer so much.  My heart and prayers go out to you to get to feeling well.

Bob!!! Awesome to hear from you!
I'm sad to hear you're having to go through more pain and suffering still. I hope the Remi will give you a reprive and that your grafting is successful.

Healing thoughts sent your way.
