I've been in remission now for over a year since diagnosis but recently I've noticed some new symptoms. I wonder could anyone shed some light on these for me. I experience the following now most days:
BM in the morning, good consistency, colour, bit mushy but no other issues.
From mid afternoon on spasms in my rectum and urge to have a BM even though I have no stool in my rectum. Some gas, lots of pink mucus with the spasm. Minimal blood, mostly smears and given how the gas is "blowing through" I would be surprised if it hadn't damaged the rectum.
The bowel, apart from the rectum, feels very healthy. No rumblings, no spasms, no cramping. All the action seems to be in the rectum.
Despite sitting on a toilet 3-4-5 times a day I feel constipated as only one of these sittings produces stool. The rest is a release of the spasm and the mucus. No other UC symptoms. Feel real good.
Does the pink mucus indicate that it comes from the rectum since the mucousa lining of the rectum is pink due to rich supply of blood vessels there.
Can steroids be prsecribed in rectal form to target the rectum and are these safer than oral pred?
Thank you.

My guess and this is only a guess is that you are having some inflammation in your rectum.  Your UC is just affecting your rectum right now.  Yes, you can get steroid rectal meds, and they are pretty safe, I personally had no side effects on them.  I would recommend cortifoam....really easy to take and worked wonders for me.  Are you still taking the rectal mesalamine?  That should help as well.  I think you can get this under control pretty easily with rectal meds, and I am glad you are feeling well other wise.  Also, with the gas, have you changed your diet at all?  If I eat too much sugar, or anything with carbonation, I have the same problem.  Good luck

The mucus is pink from blood. Remember that UC always starts in the rectum and advances upward. Sounds to me as if you're starting a flare, and you need to jump on it quickly. How often are you using the rectal Mesalamine - Rowasa? If you're not using it every night, try that. If you're already using it every night, go to twice a day. If you don't see results pretty quickly, call your GI and ask about some rectal steroids. If you can stop this before it spreads from the rectal area, you'll be much better off.

By the way, welcome to HealingWell, Brian.

Brian...welcome to the forum.

Definitely you're flaring...and from symptoms it's still low in the rectum. (consider UC start there).

I see you're on the enemas...what's the schedule of them been as of late?

Start them nightly at this time if you aren't using them.

Yeah, it sounds like you will flare unless you medicate ye ol' rectum. Spasms & mucus are a big "BEWARE" sign! Cortifoam can definitely speed healing in the rectum w/o inducing steroid side effects. Take care! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)
